Due to the rugged terrain, Princess Juliana International Airport had to be constructed right next to Maho Beach, attracting thousands of visitors daily. The runway's elevation is only 4 meters above sea level, causing planes landing on Saint Martin to descend to a height of just 10 – 20 meters, right above the heads of beachgoers on Maho Beach.

Instead of just enjoying the beach, most travelers here spend their time observing airplanes and capturing spectacular moments as the planes prepare to land at Princess Juliana Airport.

For safety, airport authorities advise people not to stand too close to the runway during low landings, as the wind may propel objects on the ground, posing a threat to travelers.
