In addition to the legendary windmills, Zaanse Schans is famous for its impressive historic houses painted in eye-catching colors. A typical wooden house, often adorned in green paint with white trim and a white patch at the peak, stands out among the rest. Locals commonly use the side door for daily activities, reserving the front entrance for special occasions like weddings or when someone passes away. Notably, there is no distinction in style between the homes of the wealthy and the working class, except for size, with affluent residences featuring bright-colored objects and intricate carvings.
