Can Tho International Airport, also known as Tra Noc Airport, is located in Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City.
The surrounding scenery of this airport is marvelous as it is built alongside the Hau River, creating a poetic and romantic ambiance. Within a mere 700 meters eastward from the airport, you can reach the banks of the Hau River for an instant check-in. Additionally, adjacent to this airport are Tra Noc Canal and Ba Ly Canal, offering numerous entertaining and dining spots for first-time visitors to the Mekong Delta to experience.
History of Can Tho Airport
Established in February 1961, Tra Noc Airport is one of Vietnam's international airports built with financial support from the US government. Besides being a civilian airport, it also serves as a military airbase for the Vietnamese Air Force.
Following the 1975 liberation, this airport was transferred to military management. In the years that followed, it served as a crucial base for the Vietnamese military to combat the Khmer Rouge forces in the Southwest border conflict. Therefore, Can Tho Airport is not just a point of departure and arrival but also a landmark witnessing many significant historical events.
In 2001, Tra Noc Airport was restored to become a civilian airport welcoming both domestic and international visitors to the Western region of Vietnam. By 2009, after over 4 years of construction, it officially became the leading airport in the Mekong Delta region. In 2011, Can Tho Airport was upgraded to an international airport.
Regarding its name, the official name of this airport is Tra Noc Airport, however, many people refer to it as Can Tho Airport. In reality, the former Can Tho Airport was Airport 31, which is now abandoned. This has caused some difficulties for people in transportation, taxi calling, or ride-hailing.
Scale and Operational Capacity
The total area of Tra Noc Airport is 20,750 square meters, with a maximum capacity of 3 to 5 million passengers and over 5,000 tons of cargo per year. According to ICAO standards, this international airport meets the 4E level, capable of accommodating high-end Boeing aircraft annually.
