The traditional craft village in Tuy Loan ancient village
The rice paper craft village of Tuy Loan has been renowned since before the 1975 era. Making rice paper isn't just a means of livelihood but also embodies the cultural heritage of the locals. Because rice paper is indispensable during Tet, festivals, commemorations, ancestral worship... it has become a tradition.
The main ingredient for making rice paper is rice flour ground from the 13/2 rice, a traditional rice variety of Tuy Loan ancient village. This rice has a fragrant aroma, when cooked it's firm and dry, but it makes rice paper much tastier than other types of rice.
To grind into flour, the rice needs to be soaked for 2 days before grinding. Then mix the ground rice flour with water, add ginger, garlic, sugar, fish sauce, or salt. To make the rice water smooth and evenly white, the maker must filter it once through cloth, ensuring the rice paper is evenly colored.
In the past, rice paper wasn't dried in the sun but rather dried three times over charcoal. Drying this way involves stacking the paper on nets, with ashes below and charcoal on top to dry the paper. After three drying sessions, the rice paper becomes dry and crispy, making it last longer as it's less prone to mold.
