Don't Miss the 20-Year-Old Sweet Bèo Cake Cart When Visiting Nha Trang
In addition to the familiar savory bèo cakes filled with shrimp or pork, Nha Trang also offers a delightful taste of traditional sweet bèo cakes, with a flavor that lingers in your memory, cherished by generations of students. Recently, this dish has also gained popularity among tourists.
The bèo cake stall is essentially just a cart on Phan Chu Trinh street sidewalk, with baskets of cakes, a pot of coconut milk, and a few simple plastic chairs. Customers who can't find a seat often opt to take their orders to go. The stall opens at 1 PM, reaches peak hours from 3 PM to 4 PM, and closes at 5 PM. Despite pleas from late-arriving customers, the owner sticks to the schedule, promising a return visit.
When an order is placed, the owner swiftly arranges the bèo cakes on a plate, presenting them neatly like bright white daisies, scoops a ladle of coconut milk on top, sprinkles some toasted sesame seeds, and serves it to the customer. Simple as it may seem, this dish holds an irresistible allure for both locals and tourists alike in Nha Trang.

Crafted from rice flour, sweet bèo cakes have a delightful taste, mixed with tapioca flour and sugar, often using golden cane sugar or palm sugar. Pre-mixed rice flour is combined with a little warm water, then poured into cooled boiled sugar water, stirred thoroughly by hand. This results in a smooth and slightly chewy texture, ensuring they're not sticky or easily crumbled.
The bowls for sweet bèo cakes are smaller than regular bèo cakes. Once steamed, the cakes are taken out and arranged in large bamboo baskets lined with banana leaves underneath. Every step of the cake-making process is done with care, cleanliness, and hygiene ensured.
The preparation of coconut milk is also meticulous. Coconut milk is cooked with tapioca starch, sugar, and a pinch of salt to achieve a slightly salty and not overly sweet flavor, complementing the inherent sweetness of the bèo cakes without overwhelming the palate.

This sweet bèo cake stall has been around for nearly 20 years. The owner recalls selling her cakes around the city of Nha Trang for 8 years before settling down on the sidewalk for over a decade. Interacting with hundreds of customers every afternoon, she always wears a smile and remains cheerful.
The price for dining in or taking away a plate of cakes is 10,000 VND. The stall operates from 1 PM to 5 PM, closed on Sundays.
