At an elevation of 200m, the summit of Bai Tho Mountain offers a breathtaking view of Ha Long Bay, especially during sunset. According to historical records, in ancient times, the mountain served as a lookout point for the Northeastern region. In 1468, during a royal visit, King Le Thanh Tong inscribed his poem, “Through countless ages, the South's skies and rivers stand firm,” onto the mountain's cliffs. Subsequently, more poems were added over time.

Though not towering, the ascent up the mountain is far from simple, featuring steep and rugged stretches. Some sections have one side covered in loose rocks while the other side drops into a deep abyss. Local residents often raise herds of goats on the mountain.

Currently, golden-haired monkeys still inhabit the mountain, sharing the same species as the monkeys dedicated to medical research on Reu Island, Cẩm Phả City. Occasionally, these monkeys sneak into the kitchens of houses at the foot of the mountain to forage for food.

Up to this day, historical relics line the path leading to the summit of Bai Tho Mountain. It served as the central telegraph office during the anti-American period in Quang Ninh, necessitating relocation to the mountain to evade bombings.

At the mountain's peak, the sacred red flag with a golden star proudly flutters. This is also where, on the morning of May 1, 1930, the locomotive driver of Ba Deo station, named Dao Van Tuat, secretly climbed to hoist the Party flag in celebration of International Workers' Day.

In 1992, the cluster of Bai Tho Mountain was recognized as a National Cultural and Historical Monument, consisting of three sites: “Inscriptions on the mountain, Long Tien Pagoda, and Duc Ong Temple.” Presently, the mountain's summit retains various relics, including a flagpole with the red hammer and sickle, an observation deck, and the 12.7mm anti-aircraft position of the Bach Dang self-defense battalion during the anti-American era. Other features include a postal cave, the command post for air defense and surgery, and the provincial hospital of Quang Ninh.

Thus, Bai Tho Mountain is a heritage steeped in historical significance, a folklore legend in the region bordering Ha Long Bay. Bai Tho Mountain is the “divine eye” of the Northeast. From ancient dynasties to the era of Ho Chi Minh, its military prowess echoed through the ages.

Bai Tho Mountain is also a place that binds the culture of successive Vietnamese generations, promoting sustainable development and deserving recognition for its role in preserving national cultural values and fostering tourism in Ha Long City and Quang Ninh province.

So when visiting Quang Ninh province, exploring Ha Long Bay, make sure to pay a visit to Bai Tho Mountain, the pride of the generations of people in the Ha Long region and Quang Ninh as a whole.
