If you're a fan of Dell laptops, you'll be pleased to know that Dell has recently revamped its classification system to make it easier for users to differentiate between the various laptop series.
While you can't always determine the processor a Dell laptop is equipped with just by its name, at least the naming convention is relatively easy to remember. Typically, each laptop will have a model name followed by a number indicating the screen size: (5 = 15-inch, 4 = 14-inch…).
Here are some Dell laptop series and a few tips to help you distinguish between the different models.
Explore Dell's Standard Machine Series:
Inspiron Mini: is Dell's netbook product line
. All mini laptops have a 10-inch screen and Intel Atom processor. The Inspiron Duo is a netbook with a rotating screen. Inspiron: is Dell's budget laptop series with basic performance and specifications. The screen size of the laptop is indicated in the model name, for example, the Inspiron 15R has a 15.6-inch display. The exception is the Inspiron M101z model, which uses an 11.6-inch screen.
XPS: is Dell's premium laptop series with beautiful design and better multimedia capabilities. Like the Inspiron series, the model name indicates the screen size. The Dell XPS 15 model has a 15.6-inch screen, equipped with speakers for excellent sound quality, targeting entertainment enthusiasts.
Studio: Dell's laptop series for affluent users, more expensive than the Inspiron and XPS series. The two numbers in the machine's name indicate the screen size. Studio 15 is an example.
Alienware: is Dell's gaming-focused laptop brand, highly regarded by many gamers. Alienware laptops feature many premium features, cool design, and high performance. The Alienware M11x with an 11.6-inch screen is the best combination of performance in a gaming laptop, while the Alienware M17x with a 17-inch screen is the fastest notebook in terms of processing speed for heavy gaming.
Business-Class Computer Series by Dell:
Vostro: is Dell's entry-level business laptop line, designed for small and medium-sized enterprises, providing good machine configuration for businesses without specialized IT teams. In the name of this series, the first number refers to the series generation, the second number indicates the screen size, and the third number shows the processor generation. Therefore, a Vostro 13-inch with a Sandy Bridge processor is named V3350. The only exception is the V130, which has a 13-inch screen.
Latitude: is Dell's mid-range business laptop. In the model name, the letter 'E' stands for the Latitude series, the first number indicates the series, the second number indicates the screen size, and the last two numbers represent the generation of that machine series. For example, the E6420 is a powerful 14-inch Latitude laptop with a range of 2nd generation Intel Core CPUs. The Latitude series includes E4200, D430, and XT with screens from 9-12 inches; E4300, E5400, E6400, D630, and ATG with screens from 13-14 inches; E5500, E6500, and D830 with screens from 15-17 inches.
Precision: is Dell's workstation lineup. The letter M indicates that it is a mobile workstation, the first number indicates the screen size. Unlike other machine series, the number 4 means a 15-inch screen and 6 means a 17-inch screen. Specifically, in the Precision series, the M2400 has a 13-14 inch screen, the M4400 and M6400 use 15 - 17 inch screens.
In addition to the above series, Dell also has some special laptop lines, where the addition of the ATG suffix indicates a semi-rugged laptop line, capable of meeting some durability tests, if the suffix is XFR then it is a fully-rugged laptop line that has passed all durability testing standards. The XT series indicates it is a convertible tablet computer.
