Japan introduces an Exit Tax of 1000¥, effective from 07/01/2019

If you are in Japan or planning to visit, keep in mind that all tourists will need to pay an exit tax when leaving Japan, starting from 07/01/2019. The tax amount is around 1000¥ (~210k VND) and applies to both adults and children (above 2 years old), regardless of nationality. The tax will be collected when you depart Japan by plane or train.
For those leaving Japan within 24 hours of transit and children under 2 years old are exempt from the tax. Travelers who purchased plane tickets before 07/01/2019 will also be exempt from the tax.
Why do tourists have to pay this fee?
The Japanese government will use this fee to develop tourist infrastructure and improve immigration procedures. Faster immigration processes are sure to be welcomed!
Additionally, new multilingual signage and cashless payment facilities for public transportation will be introduced, as part of the preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.
How will tourists pay taxes?
The tax amount will be added to the airfare or train ticket you purchase to Japan, meaning that tickets to Japan will be more expensive.
