Introducing Messages on iCloud:
iCloud Messages takes the spotlight in iOS 11.3. Previously introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June and briefly in the iOS 11.2.5 development cycle, this feature was temporarily removed in subsequent beta versions.
Apple promised its return in a future update, and that's exactly what iOS 11.3 brings. After updating to iOS 11.3, users opening the Messages app will be prompted to enable Messages on iCloud.
Messages on iCloud frees up device storage by storing messages, photos, and attachments on iCloud and synchronizing them across devices. If two-factor authentication and iCloud Backup are enabled, Messages on iCloud activates automatically. Note that you need an iCloud account to use this feature. Learn how to create one here.
2. New Animoji
iOS 11.3 brings an additional 4 new Animoji, animated characters mimicking users' voices and facial expressions using the TrueDepth camera. While Animoji on iPhone X is limited, iPhone X users running iOS 11.3 can access a total of 16 different Animoji.
3. ARKit 1.5
For developers, iOS 11.3 introduces ARKit 1.5, capable of more accurate mapping and recognition, placing virtual objects on vertical surfaces.
With ARKit 1.5, Augmented Reality apps can detect 2D image locations such as advertising posters, integrating them into the AR experience. ARKit 1.5 also supports over 50% higher resolution (1080p instead of 720p) and autofocus functionality is now active.
4. Health Records
Apple also introduces the Health Records feature to the Health app. Health Records is designed to aggregate all user medical records within the Health app.
Health Records can store data from multiple participating healthcare organizations and can provide users with notifications when test results are available. Apple ensures that all Health Records data is encrypted and protected with passcodes.
Some other minor changes
Besides the highlighted features above, Apple also made some tweaks and minor changes in iOS 11.3:
- Apple News: Apple News now provides a list of top videos in the For You section, and the algorithm for displaying top stories in For You has been improved.
- HomeKit: iOS 11.3 introduces support for software authentication options for HomeKit, allowing developers to add HomeKit support for existing accessories. - App Store Updates: In the Updates tab on the App Store, the version number and installation size of each app will be listed below the app name.
- Face ID Side Button: On iPhone X, when users install an app in the App Store, they'll see a small animation guiding them to double-click the side button to confirm installation. In case Face ID isn't functioning, refer to how to fix Facebook not working here.
- Privacy Screen: After completing the iOS 11.3 setup steps, users will encounter a Privacy screen and icon, explaining that when seeing any app icon or Apple feature that requests the use of personal information.
