City of Havana, Cuba
Taipei is now famous for its diverse and impressive coffee scene. Gone are the days when coffee was not highly regarded here. Today, the city boasts a thriving coffee culture, with locals showing a deep appreciation for expertly crafted brews. In Taipei, coffee is roasted fresh and meticulously brewed to bring out its full flavor profile. While the cost of a cup of coffee here may be slightly higher than average, it's well worth it for the quality—from presentation to taste.
Within a five-mile radius, you can savor an Australian-style flat white, a Norwegian-style espresso, a Japanese siphon brew, an Italian doppio espresso, or an American-style latte. Cafes abound, where discussions about coffee origins and brewing methods are as common as they are in Brooklyn or San Francisco. While Taiwanese tea draws from traditional Chinese roots, its coffee culture has freely expanded and evolved, drawing inspiration from nations far and wide, each leaving their mark on the island, especially in its capital city.
According to Uncle Coffee, a local coffee aficionado and writer specializing in Taiwanese coffee culture, the coffee landscape of Taipei began to take shape some 50 or 60 years ago, influenced by Japan. Back then, it was often brewed using a siphon or hand-poured and paired with unsweetened whipped cream. Then, in 1998, the inevitable happened: Starbucks arrived in Taiwan, bringing with it espresso-based beverages like lattes and cappuccinos. In 2007, as the National Coffee Association started hosting the Taiwan Barista Championship, where winners would represent Taiwan in the World Barista Championship, participants began delving deeper into foreign traditions and ingredients to find inspiration, from the Americas to Scandinavia and Italy.
