The summit of the mountain is often covered in clouds, hence its former name, Bach Van Son.
Yên Tử - Ba Vàng Pagoda has become the center of Buddhism since King Tran Nhan Tong abandoned the throne to become a Buddhist monk and established a distinctive Vietnamese Buddhist lineage, namely the Truc Lam Yên Tử lineage, becoming the first patriarch with the Dharma name Dieu Ngu Giac Hoang Tran Nhan Tong. He constructed hundreds of large and small structures on Yên Tử Mountain for meditation, scripture transmission, and preaching. After his passing, his successor in the mission was Pháp Loa Đồng Kiên Cương, the second patriarch of the Truc Lam lineage. During his 19 years of meditation, he compiled the Thach That Mi Ngu book series and built 800 temples, hermitages, and large and small towers nationwide with thousands of valuable statues, including famous temples such as Quynh Lam Monastery, Ho Thien Pagoda in Dong Trieu... At the center of Pháp Loa's missionary activities, there is also Quang Ly Dao Tai, the third patriarch of the Truc Lam sect.
