Interactive Widgets
Similar to iOS and iPadOS, macOS finally embraces widgets. You can place app widgets on your screen, marking a significant improvement from macOS Ventura, where utilities were neatly tucked away in the Notification Center.
Interactive WidgetsThe widgets in macOS Sonoma empower users to access specific features within apps without fully opening them. For instance, you can check reminders, control music, and manage smart home devices without launching the respective apps.
Through Continuity, you can access a range of widgets in macOS Sonoma that are already available on your iPhone. All widgets in macOS Sonoma can be accessed through a dedicated widget library.
Smart Video Conferencing Feature
macOS Sonoma also introduces enhancements to the video conferencing experience on Mac, and one of them is the Presenter Overlay.
Smart Video Conferencing FeatureAs the name suggests, Presenter Overlay ensures the presenter's image stays atop the display interface during video calls. The image appears in a movable small round bubble or can be displayed in a larger size, as illustrated in the image above.
Another intriguing feature is Reactions, allowing you to share instant feedback during calls. You might be familiar with Reactions if you use leading video conferencing apps for remote work like Zoom and Google Meet.
However, on the new macOS Sonoma, the Reactions feature is blended with your video, creating cinematic effects that make reactions like paper flowers, floating bubbles, etc., appear in front and behind you during video calls. Additionally, you can invoke the Reactions feature with a hand gesture.
Game Mode
Apple's Mac lineup has always boasted powerful performance, especially since the transition to Apple's Silicon chip. However, gamers couldn't fully harness this impressive power. That's changing now as Apple integrates Game Mode into the macOS Sonoma update.
Game ModeGame Mode optimizes your Mac for a better gaming experience by ensuring the CPU and GPU prioritize gaming and reduce resource usage by background tasks. The audio experience is also enhanced with Game Mode, reducing audio latency on AirPods.
When activated, Game Mode will also give you an edge in fast-paced games like RPGs due to lower input lag, achieved by doubling the Bluetooth sampling rate on select gaming controllers such as Sony DualSense, Xbox Core, and Nintendo Pro.
Shared Password Groups
If you share a specific set of passwords, macOS Sonoma offers a better way to store them in a shared repository through iCloud Keychain.
macOS SonomaYou can create a dedicated group for sharing passwords. People will have access to the passwords and can add new passwords or edit existing ones.
Web Apps in the Dock
macOS Sonoma introduces a fantastic new feature that allows users easier access to their favorite websites directly from the Dock. You can add any website to the Dock and access it directly in a window similar to an app.
Web Apps in the DockAdding a website to the Dock enables you to access it like any other macOS app with support for Stage Manager and Mission Control. Web apps can also send notifications.
Slow-Motion Screensaver
macOS Sonoma features new slow-motion videos of various locations worldwide that you can easily set as a screensaver.
Slow-Motion ScreensaverThe new screensaver brings vibrancy to your Mac when you're not actively using your device. User profiles on the login screen have been moved to the bottom for a better display of these captivating slow-motion videos.
