2. Mỹ Hòa Pomelo Orchard
Bình Minh district is renowned for cultivating the most pomelos in Vĩnh Long, particularly the Năm Roi pomelo. The Năm Roi pomelo variety was discovered by Mr. Trần Văn Pomelo (1918 - 1990) from Mái Dầm village, now part of Phú Hữu A commune, Châu Thành district, Hậu Giang province. During his lifetime, Mr. Pomelo traded goods on the river. One evening, while sleeping on his boat near Tân Châu (a region in Châu Đốc, An Giang province during the French colonial period), he serendipitously found a fruit floating on the river. The fruit had green skin and golden-red flesh. Upon tasting it, Mr. Pomelo found it delicious and juicy. He brought the seeds back to his hometown of Phú Hữu (Mái Dầm market) for cultivation. Legend has it that fearing his descendants might pick the fruit and ruin the precious tree, Mr. Pomelo warned, 'Anyone who picks the fruit of Mr. Pomelo will get a beating with five rods.' Hence, the pomelo variety was named 'Năm Roi.' Năm Roi pomelo has been named so since then.
Currently, the largest pomelo-growing area in Bình Minh district is concentrated in Mỹ Hòa commune, covering an area of 1,200 hectares, with an annual yield of 40,000 tons. The fruit ripens from September to December of the lunar calendar. Năm Roi pomelo has very few or no seeds when ripe, thin skin, white pulp, soft flesh, abundant juice, slightly sour taste, and improves with age. With its robust development, the province has established the Năm Roi Pomelo Cooperative to provide opportunities for members to enhance productivity and supply quality products to the market. With Global GAP certification, Năm Roi pomelos from Mỹ Hòa are famous nationwide and exported to countries in Europe, America, and the Middle East.
