The colossal Buddha statue in the Kingdom of Bhutan is made of bronze and gold-plated, strikingly visible from afar. Situated atop a hill in Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park, the Buddha statue gazes southwards over Thimphu Valley. Legend has it in the Kingdom of Bhutan that the construction of this Buddha statue was prophesied to bring forth the radiance of peace and happiness to the world upon its completion. Additionally, it's said that Guru Padmasambhava, often referred to as the “Second Buddha,” mentioned this statue in the 8th century. This colossal statue of Shakyamuni Buddha stands at 51.5 meters tall, making it one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. The statue is crafted from bronze and plated with gold. Within the colossal Dordenma Buddha statue lie 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, with 100,000 statues standing at 20.32cm and 25,000 statues at 30.48cm. Like the giant statue, these thousands of smaller statues are also gold-plated and made of bronze, a primary reason why the statue cost nearly $100 million to construct when it was erected in 2015 to honor the 60th birthday of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth King of Bhutan.
