Discord serves as an amazing platform for engaging with communities and mingling with new acquaintances. Adding someone to your friend list typically requires their unique tag number. But is there a way to make connections without relying on this numerical code?

I. Understanding Discord Tags
Discord Tags function akin to Facebook's 'username' feature. They represent an exclusive string of numbers, distinguishing your account from others on Discord. Your full username will be formatted as follows:
username#discordtag
You can easily locate this string of numbers beneath the username, in the bottom left corner.

On mobile, tap on the profile picture in the bottom right corner; this is where you'll find your username and Discord tag.

II. Making friends on Discord without using tag numbers
If you have someone else's tag number, it's quite easy to find and befriend them on Discord. But if you encounter issues with the typical friend-making process, try these methods below to connect without needing tag numbers.
1. Utilize the Nearby Scan feature
Nearby Scan is a feature that helps you quickly discover friends in your vicinity:
- Nearby Scan only works on mobile devices
- The person you want to find on Discord must be within a 10m radius
- Both parties must have the search feature enabled simultaneously
Step 1: Launch the Discord app on your phone, go to the Friends tab, then tap Add Friend in the top right corner.

Step 2: Select Scan Nearby and press OK when prompted to use Bluetooth.

Step 3: If you haven't enabled the Allow new connections feature, make sure to do so.

Step 4: When the scanning screen appears, ensure that your friends are also on this screen. After a few seconds, you'll see your friend's name pop up. Press the Send button to send them a friend request.

2. Utilize Contact Sync
In addition to the method above, you can also connect with contacts in your address book.
Step 1: Return to the Friends screen and tap on the phone icon in the top right corner.

Step 2: Tap Get Started, then enter your phone number when prompted. You'll then be asked to input the verification code sent via SMS.

Step 3: When Discord requests access to your contacts, press OK. On the next screen, give the person a recognizable name, then tap Next.

Step 4: The next screen is where you'll see the people in your address book; simply check the box next to their name and choose Add Friends.

3. Make Friends through Shared Servers
If you and your friends are present in the same server, there's no need to bother asking for their Discord Tags. You can easily make friends with them right within the server.
On the Discord PC interface, access the server that both of you have joined. Then, right-click on your friend's name in the right column and select Add Friend.

If you're using a phone, the process is equally straightforward. While in the server, swipe right to see the member list. Then, tap on your friend's name and choose Add Friend.

So, now you know three more ways to make friends on Discord. Have a great time!
