Standing out in the midst of the Northeastern mountains, the mural village in Po Hen hamlet, situated at the border, delights Quang Ninh travelers with its large and vibrant wall paintings.
Discovering Quang Ninh: Impressed by the Mural Village on the Border
After the 1979 border war, 15 Dao Tằng families arrived and established a new hamlet in Po Hen, now known as the Dang hamlet. It might be called Dang hamlet because the pronunciation of Tằng and Dang is quite similar.

In 2016, the city of Móng Cái transformed Hải Sơn commune into a community tourism destination. To maintain hygiene in the hamlet, buffalo and cow pens were moved away from homes. Additionally, to create focal points, residents were urged to agree to paint murals, forming the mural village.

Under the skilled hands of talented artists, the rough concrete walls have transformed into incredibly beautiful and lively paintings depicting the people and life of the border area, attracting more Quang Ninh tourists to the border region of Po Hen, Móng Cái.

The mural paintings depict the seasons in the Dao people's village, a green frog, the village with terraced fields, and nature adding color to the village scenery. Additionally, there are many paintings describing the lives of border laborers, giving tourists insights into the local cultural identity.

In the Dang hamlet, over 90% are Dao ethnic people. The local government spent nearly half a year persuading each household to agree to the mural project. Initially, village officials set an example, and gradually, as people found it beautiful, more agreed.

Beyond the harvest season and tending to the fields, residents here have little other work. Innovations in the hamlet help locals engage in tourism, serving guests and generating additional income. Many also raise forest mice, wild boars, and sell golden flower tea, catering to the needs of distant travelers.

Quang Ninh Travel, in Po Hen, tourists not only hear compelling stories from the 1979 border war at the Po Hen border post but also get the chance to admire the mural village and explore the lives of the local community.

Previously, both the Dang hamlet and Po Hen village had very few tourists. However, with the mural village serving community tourism, the face of the village has transformed.

In addition to the mural village, visitors can explore Cao Lan waterfall, Trang Vinh river, Po Hen border gate, Po Hen martyrs' monument, and indulge in local products such as mountainous fish, black swan meat or rattan, purchasing local items like yellow flowers, Khau nhuc, banh chung nep cam, and pottery.
