Dalat Pedagogical College – A Captivating Portrait
Dalat Pedagogical College, situated in Ward 10 of Dalat tourist destination, Lam Dong Province, was constructed by the French in 1927. Architect Moncet directly designed and supervised the construction, completing it after 8 years. Initially named Petit Lycée DaLat, the school was dedicated to the education of French residents and affluent Vietnamese families. Today, it is recognized as one of the 1,000 distinctive and unique architectural structures of the 20th century.
In 1932, the school underwent a name change to Grand Lycée de DaLat, and by 1935, it adopted the name Lycée Yersin in honor of Dr. Alexandre Yersin, a French-Swiss physician credited with the establishment of Da Lat city.
Subsequently, the school was renamed Hùng Vương Education Center and is currently known as Dalat Pedagogical College, specializing in training managers for preschools, elementary, and secondary schools. The college offers diverse majors such as Mathematics, Chemistry, History, Computer Science, Literature, Fine Arts Education, etc. Many Vietnamese luminaries have studied at the college, including Prof. Trinh Xuan Thuan, an astrophysicist currently working and residing in the United States.
Unique Architecture, Blending East and West
The architecture of Dalat Pedagogical College is recognized by the International Union of Architects (UIA) as one of the 1,000 uniquely designed structures representing the world in the 20th century. Reviewing this architectural marvel, the Indochine newspaper once wrote: 'It is a grand house that no one in Dalat can overlook.' On December 28, 2001, the Ministry of Culture - Information officially recognized Dalat Pedagogical College as a national architectural relic.
Nestled amidst the enchanting Dalat tourist destination, surrounded by vast pine forests, the school stands out with extensive greenery, creating a serene and romantic setting.
From an overall perspective, the entire campus is a unique architectural marvel bearing the vintage European imprint. Simultaneously, it successfully integrates many indigenous architectural features, forming a harmonious blend of East and West. With its spacious, harmonious, and distinctive architecture, the school is not just an ideal place for learning and research but also a captivating attraction for all visitors.
A remarkable highlight of the scenic beauty of the school is the main curved lecture hall with a front length of 77.18m, a rear length of 89.8m, comprising 3 floors and 24 classrooms. The curve of this arched building is metaphorically likened to the image of an open book symbolizing the vast expanse of knowledge, representing the curve of aspirations. At the end of this arched building is a prominent 54m bell tower amidst the vast and spacious surroundings. This special building features red brick walls imported from Europe and a roof covered with tiles from France. From the outside, the walls are artistically adorned with arches, creating an elegant beauty for the building.
In addition to the main building, there are parallel smaller buildings, only about 2 – 3 stories high, serving as auditoriums, laboratories, dormitories, and more.
Another interesting fact about this school is that singer Dam Vinh Hung chose it as the location to shoot the music video for his first single and the film of the same name, 'Innocent Pink Age.'
