Phu Quoc Pearls, an Exquisite Gift for Friends and Loved Ones

The moniker 'Pearl Island Phu Quoc' likely stems from its rich history of hosting numerous precious natural pearl varieties; however, the quantity of these pearls has diminished over time.
Since the 20th century, pearl diving in rivers or seas has been considered the most common method to harvest this type of jewelry. Artisans had to carefully examine each oyster to find those with new pearls, as not every oyster in its natural habitat produces pearls. Typically, the complete harvest of pearls accounts for an extremely low percentage.
As a result, with the robust development of pearl farming in Phu Quoc, thanks to the successful application of advanced techniques from Australia and Japan, Phu Quoc pearls have become more accessible in the market, ensuring a lucrative source of income for the island's residents.
Moreover, due to the cool nature of pearls, pearl powder is also effective in enhancing skin beauty, including anti-aging, moisturizing, whitening, acne treatment, and soothing sunburned skin, among others.
For avid travelers visiting Phu Quoc, a must-stop is at the pearl farming facilities to witness the production process and admire the exquisite jewelry crafted from those pearls!
Why is Phu Quoc Pearl Famous?

In Vietnam's territorial waters, from Quang Ninh to Kien Giang, there are sea mollusks capable of producing pearls. However, Phu Quoc pearls shine brighter and are recognized as among the world's most beautiful pearls.
Currently, Phu Quoc pearls come in two types: cultured and natural.
In Phu Quoc, the area for cultivating saltwater pearls is concentrated in Bai Truong Sea and the An Thoi Archipelago – locations with a clean marine environment, suitable salinity, pH levels, depth, and water flow for the pearls' growth. Saltwater pearls are more valuable than freshwater pearls, resistant to discoloration, self-healing, and possess a higher luster.
For natural pearls, you can distinguish them by examining the nacre, where concentric layers are visible, contrasting with cultured pearls that have a solid nucleus without concentric layers.
The quality of Phu Quoc pearls is determined by 2 standards: 2C and 4S
-
2C stands for color and nacre thickness (coating).
- 4S represents shape, size, shine, and spots in the pearls.

The Cultivation Process of Phu Quoc Pearls

In the natural environment, pearls are formed when ocean debris accidentally enters the oyster. The oyster reacts by secreting nacre to cover the debris, eventually forming a pearl. However, the likelihood of debris entering the oyster naturally is very low, making natural pearls extremely rare.
To enhance pearl production, researchers actively introduce debris into the oyster, stimulating the pearl formation process. The resulting pearls take on the shape of the nucleus that was implanted.
After crafting the nucleus as desired, skilled cultivators insert it into the oyster's tissue. To achieve this, the cultivator must follow a precise process to ensure the oyster doesn't expel the implanted nucleus but instead forms a layer of nacre to cover the surface.
Oysters are cultivated in cages, floating on the sea, using carefully selected parent oysters.
After 6 months, the pearls are extracted for X-ray examination, undergo a final selection before being returned to the sea for further cultivation. Depending on the nucleus size, pearl cultivation can range from 1 to 5 years.
Locals in Phu Quoc typically harvest pearls from August to October. During this time, the pearls are collected, thoroughly cleaned, and undergo another round of careful selection. Successfully cultivated pearls will maintain the shape of the implanted nucleus; however, pearls with imperfections or deviations from the standard round shape will undergo additional processing.
Cultivated pearls exhibit diverse colors such as white, pink, and yellow, with the most valued being black and sea-green pearls.
