Yet, a glance at the Surface Book's design might reshape your opinion. For the first time ever, Microsoft, a software giant, engineers a device with detachable screen, functioning independently as a colossal tablet. Hard to believe, isn't it?
Microsoft reveals they've equipped the screen portion with an Intel processor and a suitable battery for standalone use with the keyboard. When necessary, you can attach the screen to the keyboard dock, furnished with a dedicated graphics card and an additional battery for extended usage.
Witnessing this device for the first time left me spellbound by its dazzling beauty and exquisite refinement courtesy of Microsoft. To achieve such unique design, the company has invested substantial effort in crafting a special hinge mechanism with numerous steel bars intricately fused together.
Perhaps it's this versatility that allows this laptop model to adapt to various postures. In 2016, Microsoft caused a stir among users, particularly the tech community.
2. Acer's Unique Dual-Screen Laptop
When it comes to innovation, Acer doesn't lag behind, unveiling their dual-screen laptop back in 2011. For comparison, Microsoft (another highly innovative laptop brand) just introduced their first dual-screen laptop in 2019.
Speaking of innovation, Acer is equally relentless in launching their dual-screen laptopCreativity works in mysterious ways. However, back in 2011, people were still quite unfamiliar with such a novel design, especially considering that Windows software at that time wasn't as polished as it is today. Hence, the Acer Iconia 6120 (the name of this dual-screen laptop) wasn't well-received.
Eventually, Acer moved away from the transparent design for a considerable period. Nonetheless, this was a showcase of technology and served as a stepping stone for future dual-screen laptop products.
3. Asus Lamborghini Series: Bold Design, Racecar Power
The racecar-inspired, bold design of this Asus productWhile Acer and Microsoft focus on creative and unconventional designs, Asus opts for robust, bold approaches with its products. A prime example is the Asus Automobili Lamborghini VX7 laptop launched in 2011, a device crafted in collaboration with the automotive giant - Lamborghini.
This laptop model boasts sleek, meticulously crafted edges on the outside, so refined that one might mistake it for a heavyweight racing car. Inside, Asus equips its offspring with top-notch specifications for that time, featuring an Intel Core i7 2630QM processor, Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M discrete graphics card, and 16 GB of RAM.
Back in 2011, these specifications and design elements left enthusiasts deeply impressed with the Asus Automobili Lamborghini VX7.
4. Sony VAIO P: Surprisingly Compact
Sony always brings surprises to its fans, especially with the compact and lightweight pocket-sized VAIO P laptop. From the beginning until now, I've been listing unique laptop designs for you, but the common theme among them is their bulkiness, not suitable for carrying around. Sony takes a different approach by combining uniqueness and portability into one product. Thus, the Sony VAIO P was born.
This product line is aimed at business customers who appreciate portability and mobility in a laptop without sacrificing too much in terms of performance. The heart of the machine relies on Intel's famous Atom processor at that time. There was a time when everyone dreamed of owning a pocket-sized laptop like the VAIO P.
5. ThinkPad X1 Fold: Intriguing Foldable Screen Design
Following Samsung's groundbreaking foldable smartphone, the flexible ThinkPad X1 Fold laptop series promises to lead the design trend of computing devices in the future.
Personally, I believe this flexible design language will thrive even more in the future as the materials used, such as glass, become more durable, and the prices of these products become more accessible to users compared to their predecessors.
Lenovo has succeeded in bending laptop screensReturning to the ThinkPad X1 Fold, this foldable laptop boasts impressive specifications such as 11th generation Intel Core processor, 2 USB Type-C ports, 1 SIM card slot, 8 GB of RAM, up to 1TB of internal storage, and 5G technology.
Surprisingly, despite its unique design and the need for many components, Lenovo still keeps its product lightweight (around 1kg). The 13.3-inch display, utilizing pOLED flexible technology, is the standout feature of the ThinkPad X1 Fold.
Users can utilize the touch pen to draw and take notes on the screen with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels and a brightness of 300 nits. Lenovo is truly meticulous in both design and features for this laptop model.
Overall, there was a time when laptops had extremely creative designs that captivated users. Nowadays, companies are gradually leaning towards a safer, less adventurous path to ensure their revenue. However, there are still some exceptions like the Surface Book and ThinkPad X1 Fold that can bring differentiation and excitement to this somewhat saturated industry.
