Discovering the Top 4 Distinctive Symbols of Thailand
1. “Thong Trairong” – Flag of Thailand
One of the distinctive symbols of Thailand to mention first is the national flag “Thong Trairong”. The first flag used for Siam was a red flag, initially used during the reign of King Narai (1656-1688). The navy flag later used a different symbol on a red background, either a white chakra (the weapon of the god Vishnu used as the emblem of the Chakri dynasty), or a white elephant within the chakra.
Officially, the first flag was created in 1855 by King Mongkut (Rama IV), featuring a white elephant (a royal symbol) on a red background.

In 1916, the flag was changed to its current design still in use today, but the center color was also red like the outer stripe. The current flag resembles that of Costa Rica, which was chosen 11 years before Thailand adopted it. The main difference lies in the reversal of the sky blue and red colors.

2. “Phleng Chat Thai” – National Anthem of Thailand

3. “Garuda” – National Emblem of Thailand
The national emblem of Thailand is called Phra Khrut Pha. Within it, Garuda – a creature in Hindu mythology and traditional Buddhism – was officially adopted as the national emblem by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in 1911. Today, Garuda is depicted on the seal, used by the Thai king and the Thai government to authenticate official documents and personal emblems.

4. “Golden Shower Tree” – National Flower of Thailand
