What Draws Tourists to the Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House Is the Cross-Border Love Story Between Its Owner and a French Writer, Marguerite Duras.

The house was the property of Mr. Huynh Cam Thuan, a wealthy merchant in Sa Đéc, left to his youngest son, Mr. Huynh Thuy Le. Mr. Le met the French writer Marguerite Duras on the Mỹ Thuận ferry in 1929, and the two began living together in this house as a couple. However, Mr. Le's family opposed this relationship. Marguerite Duras later returned to France and wrote the novel 'The Lover' (L’Amant) based on their unconventional love affair. The novel was adapted into a successful film in 1991.

The unique cultural essence is vividly imprinted on the humble lands of the rustic Western region. Ong Quach Pagoda stands as one of the exemplary architectural marvels. Commenced in 1924 and completed in 1927, the pagoda has now evolved into a renowned tourist destination in Sa Đéc.

Bà Pagoda is also a spiritual retreat that travelers should visit when exploring tourist spots in Sa Đéc. This unique pagoda, built by the Phuc Kien Chinese community in the 19th century, attracts visitors from far and wide seeking blessings and serene moments during festivals and Tet (Lunar New Year).

To experience the ancient beauty of Sa Đéc, travelers can stroll along Nguyen Hue Street. This street boasts rows of quaint old houses closely clustered together, with weathered signs and rust, evoking a sense of stepping back into the 19th and 20th centuries in the Mekong Delta.

For a livelier atmosphere, tourists can explore Sa Đéc Market. Here, they can indulge in unique local delicacies such as rice noodle soup, Vietnamese sizzling pancakes, and fresh fruits.

To embrace the simple yet charming beauty of the Mekong Delta, visitors leaving Sa Đéc can venture to Cao Lanh (Đồng Tháp) and visit the Xeo Quyt relic area. During the flood season, tourists can navigate deep into the melaleuca forest on small three-leaf boats. Although not as vast as other melaleuca forests in the region, Xeo Quyt forest still exudes the characteristics of marshy, waterlogged areas, offering a tranquil and rustic ambiance.
