With experts constantly seeking and addressing iOS glitches on iPhones and iPads to enhance users' experiences with this top-notch device. Recently, they identified a flaw that could lock iPhones and freeze Messages, following issues with the iOS 11.2.2 upgrade previously compiled by Mytour.vn.
Abraham Masri is the individual who discovered this severe flaw, naming it 'chaiOS.' He found the flaw by inserting hundreds of thousands of characters into the meta-data of a web page, surpassing the character limit on iOS. When the link on the page is sent, iMessage generates a preview on the receiving device, and the issues start from there.
The Twitter user with the handle @aaronp613, who assisted Masri in testing the vulnerability on other Apple devices, responded to Buzzfeed, saying: 'The device will freeze within minutes. Then it will restart the screen.' The app won't load any other messages and will consistently hang.
This flaw has been tested on iPhone X and iPhone 5S devices, affecting all iOS versions from iOS 10 to iOS 11.2.5 beta 5, but has not been tested on iOS 11.2.5 beta 6 released today. Masri also mentioned that the vulnerability affects macOS devices.
Masri advises users to promptly delete any links received from unfamiliar users. Users can also block the Github domain on the Safari browser, although this method won't work if someone has posted the code on a different domain.
On Apple's part, there has been no response to users regarding this vulnerability. However, the severity of chaiOS is quite high, and Apple is likely to address the vulnerability in the earliest security update.
