Exploring the Current Traffic Congestion Situation
Task:
Our country is experiencing rapid development, accompanied by the swift growth of major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, and others. Alongside urbanization, there is an increase in both population and transportation within these major cities. This has led to severe traffic congestion issues nationwide.
Traffic congestion remains a challenging issue for major cities worldwide, including Vietnam. Without proper measures to alleviate this problem, it will result in regrettable consequences.
Assessing the Alarming Traffic Congestion in Our Country
If you pay attention to radio or television broadcasts, you won't find it difficult to encounter images of prolonged traffic congestion during transportation. In Hanoi, certain main urban roads consistently experience severe and prolonged congestion, such as De La Thanh, Minh Khai, Kim Lien, Giải Phóng, and others. These traffic jams sometimes last for hours, significantly affecting both citizens and the nation's economy. Despite continuous traffic police interventions, congestion persists. From 2008 until now, there have been over 1,379 cases of traffic congestion lasting over an hour, with Hanoi contributing 336 cases (24.4%), and Saigon having 227 cases (16.5%), among others.
It can be said that traffic congestion is causing widespread concern for citizens every time they step out of their homes. The reasons pointed out here stem from the awareness of traffic participants. As we observe, the primary mode of transportation for Vietnamese citizens is motorbikes, which are relatively small. This often leads to motorcyclists occupying lanes and weaving through traffic, causing localized congestion and hindering movement. The second reason is the extremely imbalanced ratio of transportation vehicles in our country. According to reported statistics from 2013, motorbikes accounted for 75.4% in Hanoi, and 91.3% in Ho Chi Minh City, 92.7% in Hai Phong, and so forth, all significant figures. This imbalance results in serious consequences such as mixed traffic flow, lane straddling, accidents, and congestion when there are too many vehicles on the road simultaneously. However, the main reason lies in Vietnam's inadequate infrastructure, which fails to meet the transportation needs of the population, lacking proper renovation and upgrade proportional to the population size. Additionally, as seen in Hanoi and Saigon, the urban road network continuously intersects with numerous intersections, contributing to congestion when citizens engage in traffic. Alongside, public awareness campaigns and education remain insufficient, weak, lacking depth, continuity, and resilience. Rapid urban population growth, inconsistent planning, and the lack of coordination between relevant authorities in implementing traffic safety measures also contribute to the serious congestion issues present in Vietnam today.
As we know, traffic congestion leaves many consequences for both citizens and the nation's economy. Economic losses due to traffic congestion in Vietnam can reach 2 to 3% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). This constitutes a significant and extremely serious loss. Not only does it damage the economy, but it also subjects us to environmental consequences such as noise pollution and air pollution from emissions and dust inhalation during congestion. In 2018, we received information about air pollution in major cities contaminated with smoke and fine dust, leading to increased respiratory diseases, pneumonia, and cancer rates several times higher than usual. This is also partly caused by traffic congestion. Furthermore, it forces us to consume a significant amount of fuel during transportation or unintentionally causes minor collisions. In conclusion, traffic congestion has and continues to cause serious consequences, urging us to find solutions to mitigate this situation.
Traffic congestion is causing serious consequences for people, so urgent measures are being taken almost immediately to prevent and minimize congestion in cities in Vietnam. One of the first solutions proposed is to implement a comprehensive set of state measures to minimize congestion. Official documents and regulations issued by ministries and agencies are being urgently implemented to prevent traffic congestion. Along with that, we also carry out strong propaganda and education to raise awareness of traffic participation among people so that they understand and seriously comply with orders and laws. The state is also promoting the construction and planning of synchronized infrastructure to meet the strong development needs of large urban areas with many vehicles. Traffic police officers are being reinforced and equipped with additional vehicles to support people and regulate traffic to minimize congestion between vehicles. Furthermore, we should also minimize urbanization that is occurring strongly in other provinces in the country to further reduce the influx of people into large cities. Only then can we further reduce the increasing congestion. It can be said that our state is making every effort to implement necessary measures to minimize traffic congestion and its serious consequences.
Traffic congestion is a problem not only in Vietnam but also worldwide, it is happening very complex and dangerous. It causes bad consequences for the economy and people. Therefore, in our country, along with growth, the state has practical measures to prevent and minimize this problem to the maximum extent.
From the above situations, causes, and consequences, we deploy and research specific measures to apply, implement comprehensively in cities in Vietnam to limit traffic congestion as it is today. Hopefully, in the future, Vietnam will be one of the countries in the world without traffic congestion.
