BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System, also known as System BIOS, ROM BIOS, or PC BIOS. It is firmware used during the booting process on IBM PC-compatible computers. BIOS Firmware is integrated into the computer and is the first software to execute upon booting up.
The term BIOS originated from Basic Input/Output System used on the CP/M operating system in 1975.
Firmware is a combination of stable memory, program code, and stored data.
Distinguishing BIOS from Firmware
Examples of devices containing Firmware include traffic lights, consumer electronics, digital clocks, computers, computer peripherals, mobile phones, and digital cameras. Firmware within these devices provides control programs for the devices.
Differences between BIOS and Firmware
As mentioned earlier, BIOS is a set of instructions stored on a Firmware chip located on the motherboard of older computers. Modern computer lines utilize various types of Firmware such as UEFI or EFI.
Note that every computer will contain various other Firmware (besides BIOS/UEFI/EFI). Network cards, video cards, RAID controllers, hard drives, Flash drives, SSDs, and sound cards may all be integrated with Firmware.
Firmware for video cards is referred to as video BIOS. This is inaccurate. BIOS is only applicable when referring to the boot Firmware of the motherboard.
