1. Distinguishing LED and LCD TVs: 9 Key Points
LED and LCD TVs are favored products among many Vietnamese users today. However, many users still cannot clearly differentiate between LED and LCD TVs. If you share the same curiosity, you can quickly explore the information below!
1. About Structure
LED TVs (Light-emitting Diode): To illuminate images on the screen, the LED lights of the TV are arranged correspondingly 1-1 with the matrix of color pixels (LED backlight TV type) or arranged into a strip of lights running along the edge of the screen (LED edge TV type) and accompanied by a thin layer of light-conducting plastic.
LCD TVs (Liquid Crystal Display) are divided into 2 types: passive matrix (DSTN - Dual Scan Twisted Nematic) and active matrix LCD (TFT - Thin Film Transistor). The basic difference between these two types is the method of controlling each pixel to respond to fast/slow signals. DSTN typically responds slowly (300ms) and is therefore not flexible in displaying fast, continuous motion images. TFT, on the other hand, improves image quality and is suitable for watching action movies and playing games.

2. Working Principle
LED TV: Each pixel is usually composed of 3 LEDs: blue, green, and red. By adjusting the brightness of each LED, the brightness of the 3 LEDs can be changed relative to each other, thereby creating synthesized colors at each pixel.
LCD screen TV: White light emitted from the backlight will have countless polarizations. In front of each sub-pixel, there is a color filter, providing red, green, and blue light.

3. Design (Thickness)
One noticeable difference between common screens today such as LED and LCD is their thickness. This is also an important criterion to determine the difference between LED and LCD TVs that you should know. Thanks to LED technology, LED TVs can make the screen thinner by up to 70% compared to conventional LCD TVs, especially LED edge TVs.
4. Color Quality
To understand the differences between LED and LCD TVs, you can compare color quality. If using white LED backlight technology (single color), LED and LCD TVs are similar. However, if using advanced 3-color technology, LED color quality is much brighter and more accurate than LCD.

5. Viewing Angle
LCD has a relatively narrow viewing angle, displaying well at 30 degrees from the center, with contrast decreasing as you move away from the angle. LED screens, on the other hand, effectively overcome this disadvantage with a wider viewing angle (equivalent to Plasma technology).
6. Contrast Ratio
Contrast ratio is also a criterion to differentiate between LCD and LED TVs. Compared to LCD, LED technology produces deep black colors while maintaining brightness and sharpness with vibrant colors. Therefore, LED screen black colors are authentic, with depth and maximum contrast. While most LCD models today achieve a contrast ratio of tens of thousands:1, LED surpasses the threshold of 1,000,000:1.
7. Electricity Consumption
According to manufacturers, LED lights are environmentally friendly as they do not use mercury like CCFL lights. Additionally, the solder joints of LED screens minimize the use of lead and instead use alloys such as silver and copper. LED lights consume less electricity than CCFL lights, so LED screens can save more than 30% of electricity compared to LCD screens.

8. Lifespan
Most genuine TVs nowadays have an average lifespan of 60 - 100,000 hours, and LED TVs are no exception. You can infer from the LED bulb damage level that LED screens have a relatively high durability, even higher than CCFL lights of LCD screens.
9. Price
In terms of price, the difference between LED and LCD TVs is obvious because the price difference is due to the LED TV having more outstanding advantages. CCFL material is currently the cheapest material, while LED TVs use LED lights - which are higher quality, so the cost is higher. Therefore, the price of LED TVs is entirely reasonable, not to mention the many superior technologies and features equipped for this technology.
After reading the article, you now understand the differences between LED and LCD TVs, right? Through that, you can also clearly distinguish and gain more experience in choosing the LED TV that suits you.
