Distinguishing Email client and Webmail
In practice, when using email services like Hotmail, Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo mail, etc., you access these services on the web, managing, browsing, and sending emails. All actions performed on the web are referred to as webmail. When using email services through software installed on your computer for mail browsing, such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, it is called Email client. For example, when registering for Gmail, you need to use a browser like Chrome or Cốc Cốc to log in and send/receive emails.
Fundamentally, Email client and Webmail both serve the purpose of email browsing, differing only in access methods. With webmail, all operations are performed in the browser directly on the email service. On the other hand, with Email client, you browse emails using software installed on your computer. Despite an intermediate connection, email browsing on an email client remains normal.
Email protocol POP3
IMAP offers the advantage of managing your inbox seamlessly across multiple devices. Your email actions are recorded on the server and synchronized across all logged-in devices. Additionally, viewing email content is quicker as it only requires loading and caching the content, saving resources on your computer compared to the local content storage approach of POP.
However, keep in mind that you won't be able to perform email actions without an internet connection.
Here's a basic comparison diagram highlighting the fundamental differences between POP and IMAP.
Exploring Microsoft Exchange
This protocol, created by Microsoft, is akin to IMAP and POP. Your emails communicate with the email client through Microsoft Exchange Server and synchronize similarly to IMAP, a feature known as Exchange Activesync.
The technology behind Microsoft Exchange shares features and operational mechanisms with IMAP, but it is exclusively owned by Microsoft.
Above are some insights to differentiate mail-sending protocols like POP, IMAP, or Exchange. With this information, you can choose protocols and email browsing methods that align with your needs and devices.
