How to merge and split cells for tables in Word
1. Merge cells for Tables in Word
* For Word 2013 - 2019
Step 1: Select the cells you want to merge in the table.
Step 2: Choose the Layout tab in Table Tools on the top menu bar.
Step 3: Click on the Merge Cells button.
Alternatively, you can highlight the cells to be merged and right-click
* For Word 2003:
Step 1: Click on the Table tab, select the Merge Cells function.
Or another way is to right-click on the selected cell numbers and choose Merge Cells from the dropdown menu that appears.
* For Word 2007
Click on the Layout tab and select the Merge Cells function.
2. Splitting a cell into multiple cells in Word table
* For Word 2013 - 2019
Step 1: Highlight or place the mouse cursor in the cell to be split.
Step 2: Choose Tab Layout in Table Tools on the top menu bar.
Step 3: In the Split Cells table, you set:
- Number of columns: The number of cells to split horizontally
- Number of rows: The number of cells to split vertically
After completing, press OK
Similarly to merging, you can also quickly split cells by right-clicking on the cell to be split, then choose Split Cells from the dropdown menu. When the Split Cells table appears, proceed to split the cell.
For Word 2003:
Step 1: Click on the Table menu, choose the Split Cells function...
Step 2: Enter the number of cells to split in the Number of columns of the Split Cells dialog box and press OK to confirm.
Alternatively, right-click on the cell to be split, choose the Split Cells function... and do the same as above.

Step 1: Click on the Layout tab, select the Split Cells icon.
Step 2: The Split Cells dialog appears, enter the number of cells you want to split in the Number of columns field, finally press OK to complete.
