Looking to keep your hands occupied with a homemade Pop It? Discover how to create one using common craft supplies. Forget the traditional silicone Pop Its and dive into these 3 inventive methods for making your own Pop It at home!
Steps
Construction Paper Pop It
Trace circles onto construction paper with a stencil. Choose the color of construction paper you prefer for your Pop It circles. Use a small object, like a penny or a roll of tape, to trace 2 circles onto the paper. For a unique touch, try using different colors or add fun designs like smiley faces or flowers before moving on to the next step.
Apply clear tape to both sides of the circles. Use clear packing tape to cover your construction paper circles, giving them the satisfying popping sensation. Ensure to tape both sides for optimal effect.
Use scissors to cut out each circle and create a small slit. Carefully cut out the circles following the stencil guidelines. Then, make a slit from the edge to the center of each circle without cutting all the way through.
Shape the circles into cones and secure with tape. Fold each circle to form a shallow cone shape, adding dimension to your Pop It. Secure the shape in place with additional packing tape.
Create your Pop It outline from colored cardstock. Draw and cut out the desired shape for your Pop It outline, such as a fruit, character, or other fun design ideas like a rainbow or a cactus.
Transfer and cut out the circles on your Pop It outline. Position the circles onto your Pop It outline, trace around them with a pencil, and then cut them out to complete your homemade Pop It.
Attach the circles to the holes in your Pop It shape. Take each circle and insert it gently into a hole cut out of your Pop It shape. Secure the edges of the circle to the back of your Pop It using tape. Repeat this process for all circles to complete your DIY Pop It!
DIY Pop It from an Empty Gum Package
Remove all gum from a plastic gum package. Empty the gum package by either consuming all the gum or removing the pieces and saving them. Ensure to peel off any extra plastic or metal from the back of the gum package before proceeding.
Trace the outline of your empty gum package onto a piece of colored cardstock and cut it out. Select a piece of cardstock and trace around the empty gum package with a pencil. Cut along the traced lines to create the Pop It base. If making a mini Pop It, use a small piece of the gum package for tracing.
Sketch the desired Pop It shape onto the cardstock and cut it out. Let your imagination run wild! Draw the shape you want for your Pop It onto the cardstock, ensuring it's larger than the outline of the gum package. Once sketched, use scissors to cut out the shape. Consider creating designs like a chocolate bar, game controller, or cupcake.
Attach the gum package to the back of the cardstock using glue. Place the empty gum package into the hole on the cardstock. Then, use a glue gun to secure the edges of the gum package to the edges of the cardstock. This ensures it stays in place. Now, your homemade Pop It fidget toy is ready! To create the signature popping sound, gently press on one of the plastic squares to pop it in and out.
Customize your Pop It with paint markers. If your Pop It looks a bit plain, regular markers won’t work on the plastic gum package. However, paint markers will do the trick. Add vibrant colors to your Pop It using paint markers to give it a unique and colorful appearance.
Create a Foam Paper Pop It
Make 2 Pop It outlines from cardstock. Choose a design for your Pop It, like a strawberry or a cow, and trace it twice onto a piece of cardstock. Cut out both outlines to create the front and back of your Pop It. Foam paper adds a fun texture, but adult supervision may be needed for this method.
Trace circles onto your cardstock Pop It outlines and cut them out. Use a penny as a stencil to ensure uniform circle sizes. Trace 5 to 6 circles onto each of the Pop It outlines you just cut, then use scissors to cut them out. These circles will be the bubbles on your Pop It.
Cut out five to six squares, approximately 1 inch each, from foam paper. Choose any color of foam paper you like, then proceed to cut out 5 or 6 squares of foam. If you're aiming for a rainbow Pop It, opt for multiple colors of foam paper.
Warm up each foam square using an iron or a hair straightener. To mold the foam into a 3D shape, it needs to be warmed up first. If you're using an iron, set it to the lowest heat and let it warm up for a few minutes. Hold the foam paper against the iron using tweezers for about 10 seconds. Alternatively, if you're using a hair straightener, set it to the lowest heat and let it warm up for a few minutes. Pinch a piece of foam paper between the straightener and hold it for about 5 to 10 seconds. Be cautious as heating up foam paper causes it to melt slightly. If it starts turning black or emitting smoke, remove it from the heat immediately and allow it to cool down before handling it again.
Place each foam square onto a bouncy ball and hold it for 10 seconds. Using a bouncy ball will help shape the foam paper into the classic Pop It form. Once the foam paper is warmed up, press it onto a bouncy ball and secure it using the circular end of a roll of tape. Allow it to sit for about 10 seconds, then remove the foam paper from the bouncy ball. Repeat this process for each foam square.
Assemble the foam squares into the Pop It shape using a glue gun. Begin by taking one foam square at a time and pushing it through a hole in the Pop It outline. Secure it in place using a glue gun and trim any excess foam. Continue adding all the foam shapes to the circles in the Pop It outline.
Attach the second Pop It shape to the back of the first one. Take the other Pop It outline that was previously cut out and place it onto the back of the assembled Pop It. Secure it in place using a glue gun. Congratulations, you've successfully created your own Pop It!
