Editing Microsoft Office files on Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides for mobile devices is a complex experience as it requires users to convert documents to a format compatible with these 3 apps. This is an inconvenient process that makes editing Office files using Google's productivity apps on mobile platforms a time-consuming experience.
Google Docs, Sheets, Slides for Android now support editing Word, Excel, PowerPoint files.
Fortunately, this is changing starting today as Google is rolling out support for editing original Office files within the Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps. You can now receive version history and real-time collaboration support for Office files that were previously not possible. In addition to all of this, users will also have access to improved sharing options and controls. Google introduced a similar feature on the web version last year, so the company has taken the time to bring this feature to the mobile app version. According to Google, the following types of Office files will now be supported by Docs, Sheets, and Google Slides.
- Word Files: .doc, .docx, .dot
- Excel Files: .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm (macro-enabled Excel files), .xlt
- PowerPoint Files: .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .pot
This feature will be rolled out starting today for G Suite and Gmail customers, although deployment may take more than 15 days to complete.
