What's new in the Windows 10 May 2020 Update?
Like clockwork, every year the software giant from Redmond releases two major updates for Windows 10 users, one in spring and one in autumn.
The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is the latest Windows 10 update currently available. Below, Mytour will highlight the new features in the Windows 10 May 2020 Update.
Enhancements to Windows Update
On Windows 10, Windows Update will automatically install certain updates when available. With the latest update, the Windows Update feature has been improved, displaying all updates in a single window, including driver updates, features, and quality updates.
To open this window, go to Settings => Update and Security => Windows Update => View optional updates, where you can choose any updates to install.
New Cortana Experience
Microsoft is enhancing the Cortana experience with a redesigned interface inspired by chat interfaces from messaging apps like Skype, Zalo, and more. Users can now input questions instead of relying solely on voice commands.
Additionally, users can resize and move the Cortana window to any position on the desktop by clicking the Title bar and dragging. The update also supports both dark and light themes.
Cloud Download Option
The new update introduces a Cloud Download option, allowing users to reset their PC to its original default state. Navigate to Settings => Update and Security => Recovery, select reset Windows 10, and erase everything.
Now you will notice the Cloud Download option. Click on the option, and the system will download and install the latest version of Windows 10.
Faster Windows Search
The Windows 10 May 2019 Update addresses search issues on the Start Menu by discontinuing the use of the old search indexes. However, these indexes consume significant system resources and lead to performance-related problems.
Microsoft states that the new Windows 10 update optimizes search indexes, significantly improving search speed.
Show Hard Drive Information in Task Manager
Task Manager has been updated to display additional information about the type of hard drive, making it easy for users to identify whether their computer is using an SSD or HDD. This information is shown in the Performance tab. Open Task Manager with the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Esc, and click More Details here.
Additionally, this tab also shows information about GPU temperature.
Display FPS in Xbox Game Bar
In the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, Game Bar will now display both FPS counter and achievement notifications as an overlay. Press Windows + G to open Game Bar while playing to show the real-time FPS counter.
No Password Login Option
To access the 'Make your device passwordless' no-password login option, go to Settings => Accounts => Sign-in. Essentially, this feature works by removing the password requirement and prompting users to log in using a PIN or Windows Hello biometric security features such as facial recognition or fingerprint.
Rename Virtual Desktops
With the latest Windows 10 update, users can effortlessly rename virtual desktops instead of using default names like Desktop 1 or Desktop 2.
Simply click on the desktop name at the top of the Task View window, enter any name you want to use, even including emojis.
Redesigned Network Status Window
The Network Status window (found in Settings => Network and Internet => Status) has been redesigned, displaying all networks at the top of the window.
Network Camera Support
Microsoft is adding a feature to support IP-based cameras on various Windows 10 versions. Users can add network cameras by accessing Settings => Devices => Bluetooth and other devices => Add Bluetooth or other device.
If a network camera is detected locally, Windows 10 will automatically integrate it into the system, or users can manually add it.
Disable Automatic App Restart on Login
Windows 10 will automatically reopen apps like the Chrome browser after users restart their PCs. In the new Windows 10 update, users can disable this option by accessing Settings => Accounts => Sign-in options. Under Restart apps, find and turn off the option 'Automatically save my restartable apps when I sign out and restart them. . .' and you're done.
Enhancements to Paint and WordPad
Microsoft transforms Paint and WordPad into optional features, meaning users can uninstall these apps to free up space. Go to Settings =>Apps =>Apps and features =>Optional features. Here you will find options for Paint, WordPad, Windows Media Player, and more.
Windows Subsystem for Linux 2
The most significant change in the May 2020 Update has to be the integration of a custom kernel into Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2). This enhances the performance of the Linux Subsystem on Windows.
Microsoft states that it will add support for Linux GUI applications or hardware GPU acceleration in future updates.
