Microsoft typically provides detailed change descriptions for Edge builds on the Dev channel. However, today marks a significant change as they posted an article on the forum discussing the latest Canary build, version 80.0.319.0. The company is debating whether to publish daily update articles on Canary builds to gauge user interest.
Edge Canary Build Allows Importing Firefox Browsing History
To begin, Microsoft has released a detailed description of the changes in a rather cryptic manner, but user Cameron_Bush has decoded this description. Although still in its daily release cycle, there are quite a few new features updated in this build, including the ability to import web browsing history from Firefox as well as extension support to customize the browser interface from the Chrome Web Store. Here are some of the newly updated features:
- Adding favorites is now easier - Opening items in the collection with the keyboard - Warning when downloading dangerous files - Displaying publisher information in the extension section - New options for organizing, sorting installed apps - Additional zoom options - Microphone or camera usage will be displayed on the address bar - Extension tools for browser interface edits can be installed from Chrome Web Store - Opening apps via keyboard - Importing Firefox history is possible.
Similar to the Dev build, Microsoft provides 2 lists of bug fixes and updates, one for operational issues and one for reliability. Below is the list of security updates and reliability:
- Favorites items opened via touch screen no longer crash the browser - The system does not hang when loading internal network web pages - Reopening windows is now easier - Some issues in app protection have been resolved - Settings page does not crash when adding tracking prevention exceptions - Windows will not be created off-screen - Improved success rate of password entry - Opening new tabs quickly - Downloads will still succeed if you close tabs quickly - InPrivate windows can be opened successfully - Quick closing of windows is possible - Saving documents in PDF format will not crash the tab.
Finally, here are the operational changes in this release, including regular updates of new enhancements on this web browser:
- Temporarily removed the new PDF toolbar
- Extension sorting will be done by separate sources such as Web Store or unpacked files
- Access to standard form controls is possible
- Spacing between items in history has been altered
- Internal network search will appear on the address bar
- Data when searching on the address bar will be stored in the cloud platform for synchronization with other devices
- Language on error pages has been improved
- Improved performance of internal network search
- Tabs created off-screen can be moved
- Items in history deleted via web browser data dialog will be completely removed from the current version
- Images on certain websites are no longer cropped
- Edge will regularly update new enhancements on the browser.
The latest build is being rolled out to all users on the Canary channel, and these enhancements will reach users on the Dev channel at some point next week.
