In various situations, it becomes necessary to block certain websites, such as when there are children in the household. Blocking websites is quite straightforward, and no additional software installation is required. However, those not familiar with IT might encounter some difficulties. Therefore, in this article, we will provide detailed steps on how to block websites in your browser.
1. Blocking Websites Using the Host File
Step 1: Open File Explorer, then navigate to the etc folder containing the hosts file via the path: C:WindowsSystem32driversetc. Alternatively, you can copy and paste this path into the address bar of File Explorer and press Enter.
Step 2: Right-click to open the host file, then select Open with and choose Notepad.
Step 3: After opening the hosts file with Notepad, enter the command line:
127.0.0.1 [website address to block]
Example: If you want to block Youtube, enter the command line 127.0.0.1 www.youtube.com. To block Facebook, add the command line 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com. If you want to block additional websites, enter similar command lines.
To unblock a website, simply open the host file and delete the lines you added.
2. Blocking websites on Chrome browser
To block websites on the Chrome browser, you need to install an extension called Block Site into your browser.
Step 1: Visit the link below to install the Block Site extension:
Click on Add to Chrome.
A confirmation notification will appear, choose Add Extension.
Once the extension is added, you will see the red Block Site icon on the interface, and Block Site will be activated by default.
After adding the extension, the interface will display the red Block Site icon, and Block Site will be activated by default.
Step 2: To block a specific website, you can follow these steps:
Method 1: Visit the website you want to block, then click on the extension icon and select Block this site.
Example: To block YouTube, open the YouTube website, then click on the Block Site icon and select Block this site.
Method 2: Enter the list of websites you want to block.
Click on the Block Site icon, then select the settings gear icon:
A new webpage will appear, enter the website address you want to block, then click the green plus button on the right side.
When accessing a blocked website, the interface below will appear, indicating that the website has been successfully blocked.
You can block multiple websites in the same way as above. To unblock a website, simply click on the minus icon.
To disable Block Site, simply click on the Block Site icon and drag the slider to the left until it turns gray, as depicted below.
Moreover, this utility offers an automatic blocking feature for adult websites. By enabling this option, all adult content will be automatically filtered, eliminating the need for manual intervention.
To activate this functionality, access the utility and navigate to the Adult Block section. Then, toggle the Block all adult sites setting.
