The One Pillar Pagoda is a unique architectural masterpiece intertwined with the cultural and historical heritage of the nation. It is not only hailed as the most artistically unique temple in Vietnam and Asia but also revered as a spiritual destination, symbolizing a thousand years of cultural heritage in the capital city of Hanoi.
The One Pillar Pagoda, also known as Dien Huu Pagoda or Lotus Pedestal, is renowned for its unique architecture, with the entire pagoda built on a single stone pillar about 4m high. It was commissioned during the Ly Dynasty in Thanh Bao Village, Quang Duc District, west of the ancient Thang Long Imperial Citadel. Today, the pagoda stands on One Pillar Pagoda Street, adjacent to Ba Dinh Square - the Presidential Palace.
The construction of the One Pillar Pagoda was inspired by a dream of King Ly Thai Tong, where he saw the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara sitting on a lotus pedestal and invited him up. Upon waking, the king recounted the dream to his courtiers and was advised by the monk Thien Tue to build a pagoda. Thus, in the winter of 1049, King Ly Thai Tong ordered the construction of the pagoda. To create the One Pillar Pagoda, the king had a stone pillar erected in the middle of a pond and built a lotus pedestal with a statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara on top.
After the pagoda was built, King Ly Anh Tong often came to pray and perform good deeds at the bridge, so shortly thereafter, the queen became pregnant and gave birth to a handsome prince. Thanks to the miraculous birth of the prince, the king considered it a blessing bestowed by heaven and earth, so he built another temple next to the One Pillar Pagoda to express gratitude. This complex was named Dien Huu Pagoda with the hope of 'long-lasting blessings.'
In order to renovate the pagoda, King Ly Nhan Tong ordered its reconstruction in 1105 and added two white porcelain towers in front of the courtyard. Three years later, Queen Nguyen Phi Y Lan ordered the casting of the 'Unified World Bell' to awaken the hearts of the people.
