(Homeland) - According to American billionaire Elon Musk, the free encyclopedia Wikipedia is demanding users to excessively contribute.
Despite Twitter-X facing various issues, Elon Musk consistently targets new adversaries. Most recently, Elon Musk is endeavoring to 'confront' Wikipedia. According to this American billionaire, the free encyclopedia is demanding users to contribute excessively.
During the past weekend, Elon Musk posted a series of messages regarding Wikipedia. Among them, Elon Musk raised the question, why does the Wikimedia Foundation need 'so much money' for Wikipedia. This fund frequently seeks contributions from users.
According to Musk, Wikipedia 'certainly' doesn't need to utilize all that money to sustain operations, and he even includes a link to the official financial reports and operational budgets of Wikipedia. According to this, the Wikimedia Foundation utilizes funds as follows: 43% for 'direct support' for its websites, 32% to support the community, 13% for management and operations, and 12% for fundraising.
Wikimedia Foundation provides an explanation through the Community Notes of this very application. According to this, Wikipedia is one of the most frequently accessed websites, and this organization has to handle 'over 25 billion page views per month and over 44 million page edits per month. Therefore, a considerable amount of funding is required to keep everything running smoothly.
However, Musk seems unsatisfied with the way Wikimedia Foundation allocates funds. In fact, he even proposes the idea of donating $1 billion to the Wales fund if Wikipedia changes its name as desired by Elon Musk. Right after this statement by Musk, journalist Ed Krassenstein calls on Wikimedia Foundation to agree because the name could be changed immediately after receiving the money. However, Musk has added his own condition: 'At least a year. I'm not foolish.'
