Recently, the CEO of the world's largest electric car company, Tesla, Elon Musk, unveiled a prototype robot named 'Optimus' with a humanoid appearance. The robot comes with AI software, sensors, and features supporting Autopilot on Tesla vehicles. Before delivering a keynote speech at Tesla's AI Day 2022, Musk teased that the 'gentleman' in the prototype made appearances since last year but officially debuts today.
According to shared information, the introduced robot has been in development for just six months. Tesla faces numerous challenges to turn a prototype on paper into a smoothly operational product for mass production. The completion of the Optimus robot is expected in the coming months, or if conditions are not met, it may extend for a few more years.
Inside Optimus, there's a 2.3 kWh battery, running on Tesla SoC, and capable of connecting to Wifi and LTE. Current activities are addressing persistent issues related to the motion of the robot's joints, such as hands, wrists, and knees. Tesla is striving to develop the robot to use only six different drive sets to solve operational issues at the joints.
Tesla's Autopilot software, which operates smoothly on electric cars, is now being adapted for the Optimus robot to function as closely to a human as possible. Optimus's movements aim to perform lifting and opening a box, followed by the ability to invert the operation, repeating the process. Additionally, it targets adapting to remote movements to apply them to hazardous activities, impacting humans.
Elon Musk asserts that this robot will reshape the world's civilization towards a brighter future. Moreover, the robot holds the potential to enhance productivity and boost the economy more than humans. Additionally, the wealthiest man on the planet emphasizes that the robot is Tesla's utmost focus for development this year, surpassing the importance of the electric vehicle business in the coming time.
In the future, the robot introduced by Tesla will be capable of performing various tasks to replace humans. Services such as cooking, gardening, cleaning, housekeeping, and even companionship for both genders. The production of Optimus will commence within the next year if Elon Musk resolves the current manufacturing component shortages.
Experts in the field of automation caution against placing too much trust in Elon Musk's boasts during the unveiling event. Many companies are making strides in developing robots that can walk and jump like humans, but no company dares to assert that robots will replace human labor in the future.
Although Elon Musk has been highly successful with Tesla electric cars, featuring visionary cross-era strategies, and the space company SpaceX with unimaginably grand projects, not every venture of this extraordinary mind has succeeded. Examples include the Supercharger network powered by solar energy and several other projects. Therefore, don't set overly high expectations; rather, wait and see if Elon Musk can lead Optimus to see the sunlight in the future.
With the era of 4.0 technology developing to its peak, numerous robot projects have been introduced globally. However, they are still in the early stages with basic and simple activities. But this also lays the foundation for development in the next 20-30 years. Who knows, by then, there will be robots functioning like humans, AI reaching the threshold of intelligence, and the battle between humans and robots unfolding once again.
