Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, a globally known figure, recently opened up about one of his 'worst habits.' Musk discussed his morning routine in the latest interview with the 'Full Send Podcast.' According to Musk, he seems dissatisfied with the 'rituals' he performs every morning.

Musk reveals the first thing he does upon waking is checking his phone. However, Elon Musk believes this habit isn't very healthy as it could negatively impact his daily work productivity. Many of us likely share a similar habit. In fact, according to a study by IDC, up to 80% of smartphone users have habits similar to Musk. On average, users spend the first 15 minutes of their day checking their smartphones.

Specifically, in the interview, Elon Musk said, “I have a bad habit – and I think many people are also struggling with a similar habit - that is checking the phone immediately every morning. Actually, it's a terrible habit.” In the same interview, the talented CEO further shared that he usually spends the first 30 minutes after waking up in the morning checking emails. This doesn't bring any benefits to him.

Musk aims to replace this bad habit with something more beneficial, and he has chosen morning exercise: “I need to exercise and possibly be in better condition. So, I will shift from immediately looking at the phone after waking up to working for at least 20 minutes, and then I'll check my phone.”
Similarly, a 2019 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine concluded that morning exercise directly correlates with increased daily work productivity. Engaging in regular morning exercises also enhances an individual's decision-making skills and short-term memory.

Musk typically goes to bed at 3 am and wakes up at 9 am. His reason for checking emails immediately after waking is to stay on top of his company's work situation. Managing two major corporations, SpaceX and Tesla simultaneously, often leads to unexpected events overnight. So, it's understandable that the CEO wants to immediately grasp the situation upon waking, even though he's trying to break this bad habit.
Not only the habit of checking the phone every morning, but also using the phone before bedtime is a bad habit. These habits negatively affect sleep quality, concentration, work productivity, and mental health. Numerous scientific studies have highlighted the harmful effects of using the phone late at night or early in the morning.

Several studies advise users not to keep their phones in the bedroom. If you use a smartphone as an alarm clock, it's recommended to get a traditional alarm clock. Every morning, upon waking up, we should engage in morning exercise, move for about 20 minutes, and only then check the phone for updates.

Changing this habit seems challenging for many. However, we should listen to our bodies and find ways to improve our quality of life. After all, smartphones are just tools to serve our lives, making them better, and we shouldn't let ourselves become dependent on these technological gadgets.
