Green trees play an immensely important role in environmental protection and human survival. Often likened to the green lungs of the Earth, they help regulate and provide oxygen for all life forms. However, what are humans doing with these green trees?
The largest greenery community must be mentioned is the forest, where there is an extremely large biodiversity, with thousands of species coexisting, creating a thick, unique vegetation cover, mutually supporting each other. So, what role does the forest play in environmental protection?
Firstly, we must mention the impact of cleaning the atmosphere, regulating the air on Earth. We already know that green trees have two processes: respiration and photosynthesis, however, photosynthesis plays the biggest role in protecting the atmosphere. This process occurs when green trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, enriching oxygen in the air. We can feel this through our own experiences, in the scorching heat of midday, when we step into a shaded area with many green trees, we immediately feel easier to breathe and much more comfortable. Next is the ability to filter out dirt in the air, although this ability is only relative, it still brings certain effects. Especially for tree species with wide, rough leaf canopies, the ability to filter dust in the air is even better. The mechanism is mainly when the wind blows carrying dust in the air through the tree canopies, the leaves will retain most of the dust on the surface, when it rains, this layer of dust will be washed away and flow down to the ground, creating a natural circulation. Around factories and on roadsides, people often plant many trees partly for this reason.
An indispensable function when it comes to greenery in environmental protection is its ability to prevent soil erosion and landslides. In mountainous and hilly areas with steep slopes, natural disasters such as floods frequently occur. If there were no greenery, the land would continuously erode, forming large gullies, and the topsoil would wash away, leaving behind barren, hardened soil unsuitable for cultivation. This greatly affects agricultural cultivation and the livelihoods of the people. Additionally, wind and storms are major factors causing imbalance in vegetation cover, with seasonal winds carrying heat, sand, and dust, burying vast fields, crops, polluting the air, reducing the pollination ability of flowers, etc. If left unprotected, homes, crops, and livestock will be swept away by incoming storms. However, planting greenery to form forests or large patches can significantly reduce these impacts.
Greenery also plays a crucial role in soil improvement, making it loose, retaining adequate moisture for the surface, retaining water and other nutrients in the soil. When leaves fall and decompose, they turn into organic fertilizer, providing the soil with a considerable amount of nutrients. Moreover, greenery provides humans with food, a rich variety of fiber, and also supplies a large amount of materials such as wood, bamboo, rattan for the construction industry, furniture, and paper production for our use.
As mentioned earlier, the largest greenery community must be mentioned is the forest, where there is the highest level of biological diversity, with various types of greenery from woody stems to grass stems, climbers, each species has different lifespans, they are also stratified according to height and their preferences for shade or light, along with other characteristics of other plant species. This rich diversity has created an ideal habitat for wild animals such as deer, deer, monkeys, squirrels, tigers, as well as countless other birds and insects. This creates ecological balance, ensures Earth's biodiversity, helps preserve rare and endangered flora and fauna. If humans know how to exploit it reasonably and effectively, this is truly a very valuable resource that nature has bestowed upon us, as from here we can extract precious medicines, precious woods such as ironwood, ebony, agarwood, and valuable minerals with a permissible limit. In addition to natural forests, humans also plant various types of artificial forests such as bamboo forests, rattan forests, acacia forests, or mangrove forests, to suit usage purposes and protect life from harmful effects from nature.
Today, forests are also ideal ecotourism destinations, suitable for nature-loving tourists who enjoy exploration. Because forests carry a natural, fresh, and abundant beauty, when you come here, you feel like you're returning to ancient, pristine, mysterious times, when there were no factories, city smog, enjoying the sweet, cool air is truly wonderful. In residential areas, green cities also create landscapes, enhance aesthetics, provide shade for streets, schools, houses, reduce heat, pollution, and noise.
With such significant roles, yet nowadays, human awareness of preserving and protecting greenery, forest protection is increasingly lacking. They cannot imagine the consequences behind the extensive deforestation, only focusing on immediate benefits. Occasionally, the news reports deforestation by loggers, illegal logging, forests burned by locals for farming, and forests are becoming depleted. The barren land area is increasing rapidly, and reforestation efforts cannot compensate for the irresponsible destruction by unaware individuals.
The consequences are severe floods, landslides in mountainous areas, causing damage to many houses, properties, and even human lives. In some places, due to excessively hot weather, forest fires occur, animals lose habitats, species go extinct, and humans resort to hunting, leading to severe ecological imbalance. The repercussions of deforestation are truly extensive and cumulative.
Recognizing the seriousness of indiscriminate deforestation, our Party and state have implemented appropriate policies to protect forests, such as providing incentives for afforestation, actively greening barren land areas, and state support for capital and tree species. Or disseminating information through mass media about the role of forests and the consequences of deforestation, encouraging tree planting and urban greening.
For each student, we need to actively participate in promoting and encouraging afforestation, warning relatives and everyone around us about the harmful effects of deforestation. At the same time, we must study diligently, use paper and water efficiently, avoid littering, and protect and care for the greenery around us. This is also a significant contribution to the endeavor of protecting a green, clean environment for our lives.
