The Pù Luông Nature Reserve (KBTTN) covers an area of 17,662 hectares, making it the largest remaining limestone mountainous region in Northern Vietnam. It features three main types of forests: Dense lowland forests on lowland and low mountains; forests on limestone mountains; and vegetation carpets of bamboo and ferns.
The Management Board of Pù Luông Nature Reserve states that the reserve currently houses 1,109 vascular plant species, belonging to 447 genera and 152 families. Among them, 42 species are unique to Vietnam, and four species are listed in the World Red Data Book. The reserve is also home to nearly 600 animal species, including mammals, birds, and amphibians, with 51 rare and endangered species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book and the World Red Data Book.
The reserve hosts 26 mammal species, 5 bat species, 9 bird species, 5 freshwater fish species, and 6 reptile species. Notably, Pù Luông Nature Reserve is home to the second-largest population of the critically endangered Delacour's langur (Trachypithecus delacouri) in Vietnam, following the Nature Reserve Vân Long (Ninh Bình) with approximately 31-38 individuals.
