II. Sample Essay Embarking on the Tale of Tấm Cám as a Little Fish
I am a tiny little fish, living in a small river that flows through the village. I find joy in my current life, swimming and foraging for food with my friends. However, life sometimes brings unexpected twists that I cannot foresee. Throughout my existence, I've witnessed various amusing and poignant tales, but the story that left the deepest impression on me is the life story of Tấm.
On that day, as usual, I happily set out to hunt for food. Exhausted upon returning home, I dozed off and found myself snugly tucked in a fisherman's basket upon waking up. I struggled to escape but in vain. Other fish and shrimp in the basket advised me to accept our fate. However, after a while, inexplicably, everyone else managed to escape, leaving me alone in the darkness. I sighed in silence when I heard sobbing, such a heartbreaking cry that resonated with sorrow and burden. If I were outside, I would have surely comforted and consoled the young girl. Just as I felt sympathy and sadness, a bright light appeared, revealing an elderly man with silver hair and a benevolent face, holding a gleaming staff. He looked at the weeping girl and asked:
- My child, why are you crying so?
The girl, amidst tears, replied in a voice full of sorrow:
- I am Tấm, accompanying my sister Cám to catch shrimp and fish. Whoever gets more will receive a woven apron from our mother. I strive to catch as many shrimp and fish as possible, but Cám deceives me, pouring all of my harvest into her own basket...sob...sob...sob
After hearing the girl speak, I learned that she was Tấm. On ordinary days, while swimming in the river, I've heard people in the village praising this Tấm for her exceptional qualities. I heard that Tấm has had a difficult life since childhood, orphaned early, living with a wicked stepmother and stepsister who constantly abused and bullied her. Despite being mistreated, Tấm remained kind-hearted, compassionate, and diligent. Despite the bullying, she always trusted and loved her stepmother and stepsister, making her vulnerability easy for them to exploit.
As for the Deity, upon hearing Tấm's story, felt great compassion and asked:
- Is there anything left in your basket?
Upon opening the basket, Tấm discovered me inside. Following the Deity's instructions, Tấm brought me home. She released me into the house's well, and at that moment, I felt immense joy, returning to my own habitat. Not only that, but Tấm also took great care of me, reserving a portion of her meals for me. Every mealtime, I eagerly awaited to hear her gentle voice:
'Bubble, bubble, clatter, clatter
Up to the golden rice we gather
Our silver rice on display
Avoid eating stale rice today
Flowery porridge in others' array'
From that day onward, Tấm and I were inseparable. Tâm shared her joys and sorrows with me every day.
One day, I heard a call, and as I appeared, I saw the menacing figures of Cám's mother and daughter. Intending to escape, I couldn't evade their grasp. They captured and slaughtered me. My bones were mercilessly crushed and tossed into the kitchen's ash pile. With the Deity's help, my spirit followed Tấm. Upon learning of the tragic incident, Tấm wept profusely for me. After Bụt intervened, she located my bones and buried them beneath the four corners of her bed.
In that year, the king held a grand ceremony to find a wife. Everyone flocked to test their luck, including Cám's family, but Tấm was forbidden to attend. To keep Tấm at home, the wicked stepmother ordered Cám to finish threshing all the rice and red beans before she could go. Tấm worked while shedding tears. The Deity, moved by pity, appeared to help. After finishing, the Deity instructed Tấm to dig up four bone jars beneath her bed to create attire for the event. To my surprise, my bones transformed into splendid dresses and beautiful shoes. Tấm, dressed like a celestial beauty, attended the royal event. I hoped she would be chosen as the queen, compensating for her hardships and suffering.
In haste, on her way to the event, Tấm lost one of her shoes. It seemed lost, but little did everyone know, the king found it on the road. During the event, the king decreed that whoever the shoe fit would become his wife. People eagerly tried, each hoping for a perfect fit, but none could match Tấm's foot. Thus, Tấm was favored in the court, living happily with the king, while the mother and daughter who had killed me harbored resentment and jealousy in their hearts.
One might have expected Cám's family to relent, but they persisted in scheming against Tấm. On the day of the father's death anniversary, as Tấm returned to pay respects, her heart filled with longing for her parents. While climbing to pick betel leaves to offer to her father, the wicked stepmother struck the tree down, causing Tấm to fall and meet her demise. Sadly, the hands of cruelty and selfishness had taken Tấm's life. The stepmother then brought her own daughter into the palace as the new queen, enjoying wealth.
As for Tấm, in death, she transformed into a golden bird to stay by the king's side. Yet, the mother and daughter, relentless, killed the golden bird. Tấm then transformed into a peach tree and a loom, but Cám continued to torment her. Finally, she transformed into a ripe persimmon, releasing a fragrant scent. One day, an old woman passing by the persimmon tree exclaimed:
'Oh, dear persimmon, you've fallen for me
I'll smell you, not eat, so let it be'
As soon as the words were spoken, the ripe persimmon fell down. The old woman carefully took it home, cherishing it every day. Tấm understood the old woman's heart, repaying her kindness by helping with household chores whenever she was away. After a while, the elderly lady discovered Tấm and asked her to stay, to be companions in their twilight years.
One day, as the king passed by and stopped for water and betel from the old woman, he recognized the betel box that Tấm had crafted for him. Curious, he inquired, and the old woman narrated the story of Tấm. The king and Tấm reunited in boundless joy. They returned together and lived happily ever after. The wicked mother and daughter faced the well-deserved consequences of their cruelty.
I've shared many experiences with Tấm, accompanying her in the journey to reclaim her happiness. The more I witnessed her struggle, the more I admired and understood her. A girl with a kind, warm heart, rich in love, a resilient soul defeating the surrounding evil. She truly deserves happiness.
