Explore the enigmatic past of Nấm Dẩn's highland in Hà Giang

Nấm Dẩn's historic rock site is a collection of large and small stone blocks, interspersed among terraced fields and traditional Nùng stilt houses along the meandering Nậm Khoòng stream. The story of discovering this ancient rock site is equally fascinating. Around the early 2000s, Mr. Lù Văn Ngán, a resident of Nấm Dẩn village, captured a giant frog weighing over 5kg, its back adorned with green hues and strange patterns beneath.

Even archaeologists and researchers, from central authorities to local experts, could only suggest that the patterns on the stone slabs at Nấm Dẩn's historic rock site belong to prehistoric art. The significance of these patterns may signify ancient sun deity worship or stone deity worship practices. The tradition of worshiping stone deities is still upheld by the Nùng people here, possibly with their ancestors being the creators of these mysterious carvings yet to be deciphered.

On the 1st day of the 6th lunar month, a priest from the Ly lineage of the Nùng people will preside over a stone deity worship ceremony. The ritual takes place at the ancient rock site. Offerings include a pig, a rooster, a pot of rice, and a bottle of wine. During the ceremony, villagers pray for favorable weather, gentle winds, and vibrant blossoms. After the offering, the women cook the sacrificial animals together in a communal pot and share the meal on-site.

Recognized as a national heritage site in 2008, this is the second heritage site after Sapa's ancient rock formation that has attracted the attention of scientists for research. Additionally, Nấm Dẩn's ancient rock formation is strictly protected by surrounding fences, thus the site remains largely intact. Despite the many mysteries associated with Nấm Dẩn's ancient rock formation, its archaeological and cultural values alone are sufficient to make it an appealing tourist destination.
