Pha Din Pass, also known as Pha Din Slope, spans approximately 32km, connecting the provinces of Son La and Dien Bien via National Highway 6. Pha Din Pass is often ranked among the four grand mountain passes in Northern Vietnam, alongside O Quy Ho Pass, Khau Pha Pass, and Ma Pi Leng Pass.
The name Pha Din Pass originates from the Thai language, meaning the place where heaven meets earth. The highest point of the pass reaches 1,648 meters above sea level, featuring a 70-ton television tower that withstands winds of 200 km/h.
The terrain of the pass is treacherous, undulating between mountain cliffs on one side and deep abysses on the other. The slope of the pass is around 10%, with sections reaching 12% to 15%, and locally even 19%. Ascending and descending the slope, the road twists and turns with 8 perilous curves, with a curve radius under 15m, accompanied by numerous hairpin turns, switchbacks, and various challenging road patterns including A and Z shapes, some of which are only wide enough for a single car to traverse.
Atop the mist-shrouded Pha Din Pass, quaint clouds often blanket the scenery, while beneath its slopes lie scattered villages. Standing on the incline facing Dien Bien Province, one gazes down to behold the expansive Muong Quai Valley, adorned with myriad shades of green hills and the faint outlines of the first villages in Tuan Giao District. However, as one approaches the summit, scarcely any villages remain visible; only the deep blue sky and the majestic mountainous landscape merge harmoniously.
The weather on Pha Din Pass remains cool and pleasant during the summer, adorned with lingering strips of mist after the long nights, in stark contrast to the scorching urban heat below. In winter, the temperature drops significantly, providing a distinct chilly sensation characteristic of high mountain regions.
Spring and autumn are the seasons when the valley blooms most vibrantly. The ideal times to visit Pha Din Pass during the day are around sunrise or sunset, allowing one to fully appreciate the beauty of Northwestern nature.
