Emerald elegance addresses the challenge posed by regular green. With its dark undertones of black and the vibrancy of green, it ensures sophistication while being much easier to coordinate. Fashion enthusiast Trí Minh Lê shares insights into this year's color trends.
As regular green gained popularity in Vietnam towards the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, influenced by the success of the Bottega Veneta brand under the guidance of former creative director Daniel Lee, the world took a different turn. Enter Emerald Elegance – inspiring us with the hidden leaves under the intense sunlight. Shade-loving plants often have richer, darker green leaves to efficiently absorb sunlight for photosynthesis.

If regular green brought us a sense of comfort and ease last year, this color inherently has stress-reducing effects, promoting calmness in humans, making it always 'friendly' in everyone's eyes. In constructing dominant color palettes, many fashion brands chose regular green last year to counterbalance the overwhelming negativity in the world. Fashion designers aim to bring something more positive.

However, that green has a weakness like this. In reality, it's quite challenging to coordinate – often requiring an all-toned set (as we often see many celebs or influencers use). The wearer's skin tone is also crucial to elevate this green. Overall, this green color is 'picky' about the wearer and narrows down its user base due to its specificity in building outfits that suit it – of course, something fashion businesses don't want.

In 2022, the fashion industry continues to follow the trend of 'Bringing back the luxury of high-end tailored fashion' with keywords like 'Elegance,' 'Application,' and 'Technology.' Neutral colors still dominate many color palettes in products from various brands. However, this green needs a bit of transformation and application of newer technologies.

Dark green – this deep green solves the problem with regular green. With its dark undertones of black and the green hue of regular green, it ensures sophistication while being much easier to coordinate outfits.
It's also easily applicable to various designs without affecting the wearer's comfort – Dark green will easily match with darker and popular colors like black, charcoal gray.
When exposed to light, this color pops a bit more; whereas in the dark, it's no different from black – a subtle play of 'light' based on biological and optical properties.
Moreover, many brands have applied technology in weaving and/or digitally printing these patterns onto materials to create 'non-graphic' but 'pattern-inside' fashion items, avoiding boredom in their collections.
Different materials and surface treatments are used to create contrast through light reflection, giving the wearer a better sense of feel.
Let's take a look at Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2022 Couture, Ambush Fall 2022 Ready-to-wear, Off-white Spring 2022 Ready-to-wear, Loewe Spring and Fall 2022.
Color, material, and processing techniques always form the essence of fashion.
