The BitLocker feature on Windows 10 allows users to easily encrypt devices such as SD cards or USB drives. Additionally, Windows 10 version 1151 integrates a new encryption algorithm.
Refer to the following Mytour article to learn how to encrypt SD cards or USB drives on Windows 10.
Note: BitLocker encryption tool is only available on Windows 10 Pro versions, not on Home editions.
Encrypt External USB Drive on Windows 10
Plug in your USB drive (or SD card) and wait for Windows to recognize the device. If AutoPlay appears, choose Open folder to view files.
From the Ribbon toolbar, select the drive you want to encrypt, then click on the Manage tab, choose
Alternatively, you can open This PC, right-click on the USB drive you wish to encrypt, and select Turn on BitLocker.
At this point, the BitLocker wizard will initiate on the screen. Check the box for Use a password to unlock the drive and enter your password twice.
Next, you will receive a notification for the recovery key, which is a string of characters allowing access to the drive if you forget the encryption password.
Mytour advises storing the recovery key in a file or printing it and keeping it in a secure location, instead of storing it on cloud services.
Next, select the USB drive capacity to encrypt. You can choose a specific usage capacity or encrypt the entire USB drive.
New Encryption Mode
BitLocker on Windows 10 v1511 (November Update) now includes XTS-AES 256-bit encryption mode, supporting integrity with advanced algorithms. However, this encryption mode is not available on older Windows versions.
If you intend to encrypt a device on your current computer, you can use the new encryption mode.
If you find yourself needing to use a device (USB drive or SD card) on older Windows versions, opt for Compatible Mode and utilize the AES 128-bit encryption method.
Once you're prepared, kick off the encryption process.
The time required to complete the encryption process will vary based on your system specifications, data volume, and drive size.
From now on, every time you connect the encrypted USB drive or SD card, you'll be prompted to enter the password you previously set. Additionally, you can choose alternative options to configure the drive for automatic startup on the computer or input a recovery password in case of forgetting the main password.
When the drive is encrypted, in the This PC directory, you'll notice a padlock icon next to the drive name as depicted below:
