Upon payment, guests can participate in a game of oẳn tù tì with restaurant staff and receive an instant 30% discount if victorious.
Diners at a newly opened Thai restaurant on Ly Tu Trong Street, District 1, HCMC, can join the oẳn tù tì promotion – a game linked with many people's childhoods. Customers compete with restaurant staff, and if they win, they get an immediate 30% discount on their total bill.
The program has no age limit. Players can play oẳn tù tì 1 to 3 times, and they can choose any staff member. Thanks to this unique promotion, the restaurant has been bustling since its opening days, attracting not only young but also older customers.
Mr. Hung, an office worker in District 1, has eaten at many restaurants in the area, but this is the first time he has encountered such a unique promotion. “It's been a long time since I played this game of oẳn tù tì; it feels like going back to childhood,” Mr. Hung shared.
After 3 rounds of oẳn tù tì, with a result of 2-1, the restaurant staff emerged victorious. Mr. Hung said that perhaps due to not playing for so long, his reflexes were not as sharp. Despite not getting the discount, this customer still felt very happy.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, restaurant manager, revealed that this program has been ongoing for 17 days and will continue until the end of January. The number of participating customers is increasing day by day, especially during lunchtime. Mr. Cong mentioned that despite the simplicity of the game, the number of winning customers is not high. Out of every 20 players, only about 6 emerge victorious. Part of it is psychological, as players often hesitate and lose. “To ensure fairness, all restaurant staff participate in matches with customers. Customers at the same table will select a representative to compete with the staff. If the customer wins, the entire bill of that table will be instantly discounted by 30%,” shared the restaurant manager. Ms. Ngan, a restaurant staff member recognized as the best at oẳn tù tì, disclosed that she does not undergo any training but still manages to win many customers. “It may be due to the relaxed mindset, so when I engage in rock-paper-scissors, it feels very natural and lucky, often resulting in victory, although sometimes there's pressure from customers cheered on by friends,” Ms. Ngan said. According to her, after achieving victory, many customers cheer like children, and some even return the next day to continue the challenge.
