Dress Modestly When Visiting Temples and Monasteries
Avoid wearing shorts, sleeveless shirts, or any casual attire when entering the sacred religious areas in Myanmar. This rule applies to both men and women. Women should refrain from wearing skirts above the knee, leggings, see-through clothing, or exposing their shoulders.
Maintain Order
When entering religious structures, tourists should refrain from playful behavior, shouting, or teasing each other. At Shwedagon Pagoda, it is prohibited to play music within the temple grounds, and musical instruments should not be brought onto the pagoda base.
Respect Others When Taking Photos
Some temples may require visitors to pay a fee for photography, while others may restrict photography to maintain the sacred atmosphere. Therefore, pay attention to signs indicating whether photography is allowed or not.

Additionally, travelers should avoid striking humorous poses with the temples or Buddha statues, refraining from leaning on or using the Buddha statues as props. Monks generally dislike being photographed; if you wish to take a picture, it's advisable to seek permission beforehand.
Avoid sitting with your back to the Buddha
When taking a break near a Buddha statue, it is considered disrespectful to sit with your back facing the statue.
Pay attention to your feet
While sitting on the temple grounds, be mindful not to stretch your legs or point your feet towards Buddha statues or pagodas.
Avoid excessive public displays of affection
Religious sites serve as places for rituals and expressions of reverence. Therefore, refrain from displaying excessive affection, such as hugging, teasing, or even kissing on the cheek. Holding hands might be acceptable, but it's advisable to avoid it altogether.
Respectful Silence during Prayer or Meditation
When you encounter someone engaged in prayer or meditation, steer clear of speaking loudly or making jokes as you approach. Avoid passing directly in front of them or touching them in any way.
Honoring the Monastic Community
Monastic individuals in Myanmar are highly esteemed. Visitors should avoid shaking hands with them. Women are not permitted to touch monks. When presenting offerings or ceremonial items, use both hands and approach close enough for them to receive without extending their reach forward.
Refrain from sitting higher or at the same level as a monk. If giving money, place it in an envelope or folded paper and inquire with the monk about who can accept the donation.
Besides, visitors should refrain from stepping on the shadows of the monks when they are standing, especially the head part, as this is considered an impolite gesture.
