Even the creator of Elden Ring is baffled by the game's unprecedented success
Ahead of The Game Awards 2022, which will be held on December 9 according to Vietnam time, all attention is focused on two outstanding works from opposite sides of the Pacific. In the East, FromSoftware has crafted one of the greatest games of all time, Elden Ring. Meanwhile, in the West, Sony's Santa Monica Studios has delivered a visually stunning conclusion to Kratos' saga in the Nordic land with God of War Ragnarok. Both games are deserving contenders for the Game of the Year award, but only one will claim the prize.Recently in Japan, the PlayStation Partner Awards 2022 ceremony took place. Elden Ring once again secured an award, known as The Grand Award, given to the best-selling game on Sony's console platform. As of the end of June, Elden Ring has sold over 16 million copies. However, it's worth noting that Sony awarded The Grand Award to two titles considered cash cows from Asia: Elden Ring and Genshin Impact. In an interview, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki (pictured in the center of the cover)
admitted that even he doesn't understand why this masterpiece has sold so well and become so successful. For comparison, FromSoftware's two recent works, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, only achieved sales figures of 2 million and 5 million copies respectively.“Honestly, I don't analyze the numbers much. It's true that the sales are much higher than our previous games, but I absolutely don't know why. So if you want to replicate the success of Elden Ring, I can't do it. I don't want to think too much about it because I think trying to pick out the factors that made the game successful and then copying them later is a bad idea.”Of course, Miyazaki, one of the icons of the 21st-century gaming industry, is still happy with what Elden Ring has accomplished. This allows him and his colleagues at FromSoftware to create games true to their own desires in the future, without sacrificing ease of entertainment for everyone. On another note, while listening to community feedback is good, FromSoftware and Miyazaki don't rely too heavily on it:“I can't possibly listen to all the reviews and comments from every player, and if I only pick up a small portion of the community's feedback, it could impact our game development process in the future, which makes me worried. I know I can't be 100% objective, so I've decided not to read too much community feedback on the internet.”Miyazaki may not know why Elden Ring has been so successful, but journalists and game critics worldwide have identified the main reasons. Firstly, the open world doesn't require tedious fetch quests scattered across the map, saving players from wasting too much time on meaningless tasks instead of delving into the story. Secondly, there's no need for those side quests to drive players to explore the meticulously crafted world. Thirdly, it respects players' eyes and intelligence, encouraging exploration without hand-holding checkpoints like many other games. And finally, it doesn't turn players, or the in-game characters, into the center of the universe, where every storyline development is triggered only when we're there:Source: IGN
