In the present day, establishing a domain and creating a website on the Internet is remarkably simple, requiring only a few steps. This massive number constitutes approximately a quarter of the global population. With nearly 2 billion active websites, they convey a wealth of information and knowledge across various fields, making it easy for users worldwide to access any information they seek.
However, what qualifies a website to be operational is a question that often goes unnoticed. As shared information suggests, a website must have three basic elements to exist. First is the domain, also known as the website's address for direct access. Next is Hosting, the place where data is stored for the website on the internet, and finally, the content inside the website built by users based on their field and desired direction.
With nearly 2 billion websites present on the Internet, the actual number of active websites is quite modest, representing only a small portion of the total. According to Netcraft, the direct statistics source of the Internet reveals that only about 25% of websites are genuinely active. Most are domains that have been purchased but are not used or websites that are forgotten after the owner no longer has the need to use them. Although only 25% equates to 500 million active websites, this number is still substantial.
If you only look at the Internet Live Stats counter, it's easy to think that the number of websites is continuously increasing. According to some sources, that's not entirely true, and it would be more reasonable to assume that websites are ceasing operations or expiring while new websites are emerging.
Statistics from Netcraft's graph show a relatively flat trend over the past two years. In fact, compared to October 2020, the number of hosting servers has decreased by about 7% in October 2022. Perhaps the Internet is slowing down its development compared to before. However, this is only one-way data, and it would be challenging to verify the actual situation.
We will never truly know the exact number of websites on the internet, but rest assured, it's a significantly large figure. Currently, companies and large corporations often create many websites to avoid copyright conflicts in the future. That's why many individuals and organizations own more than one website at the moment.

Therefore, in the future, as it continues to develop, the Internet will become more widespread, and the number of websites will increase proportionally with the Internet's growth.
