Manshiyat Nier is regarded as the “hidden corner” of Cairo, Egypt. Here, visitors will witness garbage scattered all around.
Everywhere you go in Cairo, you encounter trash.
According to Globo Treks, Cairo also has areas dedicated to the impoverished. However, Manshiyat Naser, or the “garbage city,” is an entirely different place. Situated as a slum at the foot of the Mokattam hill, on the outskirts of Cairo
All of Cairo’s waste is dumped into Manshiyat Naser. This causes the streets in the “garbage city” to constantly emanate the stench of rotten food, filth, and decay. The odor is potent enough to overwhelm those visiting Manshiyat Naser for the first time.

Similar to many other slums, water and electricity are significant challenges here. Aside from the people bearing a harsh exterior, the most notable feature is the massive garbage bags scattered everywhere, from the streets to the rooftops. Livestock like cows, goats, and dogs roam the streets, foraging from these colossal garbage bags.
Amidst the bustling streets, vibrant fruit stalls dot the landscape, just like any other street corner. The locals here seldom converse in any English. Despite being surrounded by the stench of decaying waste, the residents' lives are surprisingly improved by... garbage. In Manshiyat Naser, people make a living by collecting and recycling waste. Each household specializes in a specific type of waste, diligently collecting and recycling only that particular kind.

In crowded rooms filled with men, women, and children alike, everyone engages in the task of waste sorting. They sift through bags to identify items that can be sold.

In the morning, men often head to Cairo to collect waste from households. These individuals, known as 'zabbalee' or 'garbage people,' then transport the waste using donkeys or trucks to Manshiyat Naser. According to tradition, men handle the collection, while women and children are responsible for waste sorting.

Manshiyat Naser is not a typical tourist destination in Cairo. However, some ventures have started offering tours to cater to small groups keen on exploration.
