What is Concrete? Concrete (derived from béton in French) is a type of artificial stone, formed by mixing various components: coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, binding material, etc., in specific proportions (referred to as concrete mix design). In concrete, the binding material (cement + water, asphalt, additives, etc.) acts to bind the coarse aggregates (rock, gravel, sometimes synthetic materials in lightweight concrete) and fine aggregates (usually sand, crushed stone, grit...) and upon hardening, it solidifies into a rigid mass like stone, hence known as concrete.
