Ho Chi Minh City: Excitement Peaks at 1st Vietnam Bread Festival

The Vietnam Bread Festival took place at the Youth Cultural House in Ho Chi Minh City from March 30 to April 2, 2023
Organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, the Vietnam Bread Festival 2023 showcased the cultural significance of bread in our culinary heritage, sharing our traditional food with international friends. Save the date: March 30 to April 2, 2023!

In this event, 120 booths featuring renowned bakeries, restaurants, and well-known bread ingredient brands participated. Not only that, but the venue also introduced over a dozen dishes paired with signature loaves. Highlighting famous bread brands in Ho Chi Minh City like Seven Tigers Bread, Mr. Ly's Bread, and Nguyen Sinh Bread, along with various types of triangular and Western-style bread... In addition to the bustling sales at the bread stalls, the booths offering free bread attracted many visitors.

At the festival, attendees can witness the bread-making process firsthand, savoring bread with diverse ingredients and flavors. The price of each loaf ranges from 15,000 to 50,000 VND depending on the type.

Visitors also have the chance to experience various unique activities: introduction of 105 dishes paired with bread; exhibition of bread made from Vietnamese fruits and vegetables; a startup program for women and students in the bread industry; enjoying freshly baked bread. Attendees can enjoy check-in opportunities with free gifts, take photos with a 1.89m high model of Notre-Dame Cathedral made from bread; or areas adorned with bread patterns or the slogan “Vietnamese Bread, Deliciously Different.”

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Khanh, Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, shares that bread is a familiar food present from urban to rural areas, with accompaniments and bread fillings creatively and diversely prepared from local specialties. Notable examples include clam bread, shrimp and crab dumpling bread, or simply a plain unsweetened condensed milk-free loaf. This year's Vietnam Bread Festival is an occasion to recognize the values that bread brings to our culinary heritage and to spread the strong influence of Vietnamese bread to domestic and international friends, providing opportunities to maximize the skills and creativity of artisans and breadmakers.
On the first morning of the Vietnam Bread Festival, even before the official opening, thousands flocked in to indulge in the offerings of many renowned traditional bread brands.
Bread is not just a delicious dish but has become a part of the culinary life of the Vietnamese people, along with other distinctive dishes, contributing to the value of our culinary heritage.

In 2011, Vietnamese Bread earned its own entry in the widely used Oxford English Dictionary worldwide.
On November 10, 2017, during the APEC High-Level Week in Da Nang, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, along with chef Luke Nguyen (an Australian of Vietnamese descent), bought bread to enjoy a morning with delight, savoring its distinctive delicious aroma for the first time.

Recently, the U.S. travel magazine Travel and Leisure honored Vietnam as the best culinary destination in Asia in their 2023 Bucket List Places in Asia. Must-try dishes in Vietnam include: pho, banh mi, and banh cuon.
